  1. Warm-Up – October 9 Use a graphing calculator to perform the operations. 1) A + B 2) 2A – 3B 3) A x B 4) 3(A x B)

  2. Agenda • Warm-Up • Go over HW • Notes Determinants and Cramer’s Rule • Homework You MUST have a GRAPHING CALCULATOR for this unit.

  3. 4.3 Determinants

  4. Determinant of a 2x2 = ad - cb

  5. Evaluate the determinant =1(7) — 2(4) = 7 - 8 = -1

  6. Evaluate the determinant =7(3) — 2(2) = 21 - 4 = 17

  7. Using the TI-83 • Go to the Matrix menu • Go to Edit • Enter the dimensions • Enter the values into the matrix

  8. Determinant of a 3x3 From the calculator!! • Enter the given matrix into matrix A. • Go to the home screen • Go to the Matrix menu • Go to Math • Choose 1: det • Select matrix A. • Press Enter

  9. Evaluate – Notice the different “bars”? = -73

  10. Evaluate. det = -89

  11. 4.3 – Apply Cramer’s Rule

  12. Cramer’s rule is another method for solving linear systems What’s a coefficient matrix? System of equations: Coefficient matrix: Constant matrix:

  13. Cramer’s Rule says….. det A cannot be equal to 0

  14. Cramer’s Rule says….. Coefficient Matrix A is… AND det A cannot be equal to 0

  15. Use Cramer’s Rule to solve this system: Coefficient Matrix A is…

  16. Use Cramer’s Rule to solve this system: Coefficient Matrix A is… The Solution to the System is (4, 2)

  17. Let’s do that with the Calculator! Show the set up for Cramer’s Rule and solve with a calculator Coefficient Matrix A is… X Matrix is… Y Matrix is… Enter these 3 Matrices in your calculator

  18. What are your questions?

  19. Homework • Page:218 • #12-28 even • # 36-41 all • Show set-up for Cramer’s Rule and solve with a calculator • # 45, 46, 48 • Show set-up for Cramer’s Rule and solve with a calculator
