  3. Good thesis attributes • Arguable • Takes a stand • Justifiable • Not too broad or narrow • Focused • Not general • Based on evidence • Passes the “who cares” test

  4. From research to thesis • Look for interesting topics • Look for hidden meanings • Don’t be afraid to choose controversial topics Ask yourself whether the topic… surprises you makes you ask why makes you want to take a stance

  5. Read the following sections silently • Here is an example of developing a thesis And • Create a list of questions to guide your research

  6. Let’s play! • All men are chauvinists • Steroid abuse negatively affects sports • Hip-hop is the best thing that has happened to music in twenty years • Many people object to today’s violent horror movies

  7. From topic to thesis • You and a partner will have the rest of the period to come up with a topic and develop a working thesis that you will present in class. 4 STEPS • Try to be specific • Brainstorm possible questions • Brainstorm arguments • Take a stance
