International Broadcasting. Also called: Public Diplomacy. Government-run media. This broadcasting is part of a country’s foreign policy. U.S. government is largest broadcaster in the world. Japan, too: NHK is both for people inside Japan and for many other people around the world.

  2. Government-run media This broadcasting is part of a country’s foreign policy. U.S. government is largest broadcaster in the world. Japan, too: NHK is both for people inside Japan and for many other people around the world.

  3. Why broadcast? To promote your values and achievements. To reach people in countries where leaders block outside media. To compete with other nations in the contest for ideas.

  4. Part of public diplomacy • Broadcasting is usually largest part. • U.S. pays around $1 billion a year. • Also people-to-people exchanges. • Fulbright program! • Visiting cultural groups. • Sister-city programs.

  5. U.S. goal for its broadcasts • Promote U.S. values • VOA offers carefully balanced reports • Free speech • Fairness and accuracy • Open access to information • Allow all sides to comment

  6. Also public relations Broadcasts often promote arts and inventions from their nations. This is chance to say, “Look what we’re accomplishing!” Makes country and people look good.
