  2. Project Brief The brief for this project was to re-design the given product of a Hexi stove. This should improve the design already used, therefore the modifications must be beneficial to the product and those who may use it.

  3. First impressions Firstly we analysed the physical properties of the design, we found that the portability was a great aspect as, if it was to be used by the army, space in a rucksack will be scarce, this we will maintain in our modified design. The actual size of the product may be an aspect we wish to change as it is quite small and for its use this may be a problem. The aesthetics of the design are not that much of an important aspect as they are not needed, however there has been some consideration to it because of the portability this is a part of the design we wish to further. The fuel that is supplied for the use of this product may be problematic as it is small and there may be problems in lighting it. The size may also effect the product economically.

  4. Using the product Actually using the product gave us the opportunity to see what is practical about the product and what is not, we did this by frying eggs on a pan over the stove. This bought to light more problems that we had not seen physically. The conductance of the metal is average meaning it takes a while to heat up but also cools relatively quickly. This could be a problem with the time but the safety aspect of this seems more important. This we could alter with precautions. The height of the product also caused problems, as it is low to the ground the user must be bent over in order to use it, from a safety point this is not good as any issues that may arouse the movement of the user is restricted. Pictures should be hear! And hear! And hear!

Using the product continued, The fuel was a great problem as we predicted, lighting it was difficult and time consuming, the heat from one was not economic for the use of it which we aim to change. As the main design aspect of this is to be compact and light to be most beneficial, this became an issue the material used was brittle and changed shape over time (go wonky) this proved to be a difficulty as it was hard to keep it balanced. Containing the flame is also a safety we wish to overcome in our recreation of the design. The size of the stove was not as problematic as we first thought, the size was adequate for the saucepan we used and no problems arouse in that aspect. Although a non stick element will have to be considered as the waist carbon causes a difficulty in cleaning it , in an environment that wishes to not leave rubbish this is an aspect we shall consider. And hear! And hear! And hear!

Specification • Aesthetics- As this product will be aimed for use in the army and mod the aesthetics of this product are not of immediate importance, however they may wish to have the camouflage that is associated with the army and its uniform. As the stove is likely to get very hot the material must not glow as this will not be of any use to the army. • Cost- The manufacture of this product must be cheep in order obtain demand at a cheep cost. This then allows the product to be sold cheaper to the consumer and is therefore more attractive to the consumer. • Customer- this product is an out side product and is likely to be sold to the army and those wishing to pursuit an out door activity this means the product must be hard wearing and long lasting. It must not be of a fragile nature. • Safety- the safety aspect that must be considered in this product is mainly the heating of the stove, it must reach a temperature that is able to cook food without the risk of food poisoning, the heat must also be containable and insulated to avoid burning. There must be adequate insulation for the product so it may be stored after use. • Size- the size of the product is also an important aspect as it must be small and compact in order to be portable, the weight is also relevant to the size, it musty be light and this made of a light but hard wearing material, mainly stainless steal or aluminium, however it must have a high melting point.

  7. Specification • Function- the main function of the product is to produce heat in an manner that allows food to be cooked AKA a stove this must be maintained. The product will need to be of a standard that does not cause any harm to the user. This must be portable in order to be used to it s fullest potential. • Material- the product is most likely to have been made of stainless steal, as it has a high durability and high melting point, it will also be able to take some wear and tear without breaking. There must be a non stick part to it as the fuel usually used produces a lot of carbon and this must be easy to clean to be of a practical nature. • Manufacture- this product is likely to have been manufactured using die casting and then pot rivet it together method, this is one of the cheapest ways of doing it, this also allows the product may be massed made.

Specification • Interesting- likes; the compatibility of the product is satisfying and is a great advantage to the products design. • Dislikes; the fuel that is supposed to be used has no real use, it is difficult to light and is time consuming to do so it is also not economic. • Quality- the quality of the product must be relevant to its uses, the product in question is not, it is not practical to the purpose it should serve, this not the highest quality that could be maintained. • Ergonomics- the ergonomics that must be considered are the average size that would be of the best use in its purpose, the fuel that is available to be used.

  9. Our design ideas When designing our re creations of the factual design things we will consider are; .Environment, including aesthetic changes .Portability/ Compact ability/ size .Fuel. .Safety aspects. .Other aspects we were unhappy with in the original design.

  11. The bag has many functions other than just to contain the stove whilst hot, enabling it to be carried safely without any safety issues. It will also contain the portable stove and the modified fuel therefore it is more of a kit suited to the specification of out door equipment instead of just a stove. The bag doubles up as a protective blanket in case of emergencies, this is a property of the materials it is non flammable. The material this is most likely to be made of is a pyroblanket as it is both heat and flame resistant. Bag part of the design

  12. Our product specification Aesthetics, The aesthetics of our design will have a little more priority than that of the original design. As this will be used within the army we believe that the traditional camouflage will be beneficial. The product will still remain small and compact with portability a key aspect. Cost, As the original we wish to make the product as cheaply as possible but still maintaining a good quality we aim to produce this in a budget of bellow £10, this also makes it inexpensive to the consumer. Customer, the main consumer for this product will be the army and those wishing to participate in outdoor activities, these are aspects that have been considered in the design. Safety, As this is dealing directly with heat and flame there is a certain standard that will be maintained in the production. We have also designed the bag in which highlights many safety aspects that have been overcome. Size, At a maximum we are looking at the product being 200mm very small in comparison to the average cooker. This is an aspect that is greatly desired as is its compact ability though this could be problematic.

  13. Specification continued Function, We have altered the design to be both a stove and a kit equipped with the other facilities for the desired use. Thus making the re-design of the product multifunctional. Materials, We aim to use the same materials as the original was, stainless steal. we however will include a non stick element to reduce the cleaning time and the waist produced. The fuel also went through modifications. We decided to place the fuel inside a paper bag with a fuse which reduces time trying to light it and also makes the fuel more economic. Manufacture, The way the original was made was through die casting and then pot rivet it together method. We will also use this method as it is one of the cheapest ways in which to manufacture the product. Quality, we believe that our product is of abetter quality than the original and of a quality that consumers may find satisfying. We could , make it of better quality but this would involve making our budget bigger and in so doing making the product more expensive to the consumer which could put of possible consumers.

Specification continued The ergonomics that we considered were: Practicality, it is going to be used out doors and should be practical for this environment so we had to be aware of the amount of wear and tear this is likely to receive. Compact ability, The space is limited and this should be highlighted in the product as the product has been designed to fold in to its self. Portability, the product must be light, this must be considered in the designing of the product. The size of the facilities that should be used, these we have changes as we have made the product as a whole kit rather than just one stove.

  15. Conclusion The Design we have chosen is the design you see done in pro desk top, The other designs you will see on A3 paper. We have chosen our final design mainly through the size and shape of the product. We also believe that it would be more attractive to the consumer, as well a being more practical. It also enabled us to look at the safety aspects as we designed a bag also that acts as a fire blanket and a container. These are the major aspects we changed as well as the fuel, size and the flat pact aspect of it.
