  13. Functionalist Approach • View: education performs functions for the benefit of society • Teach knowledge & skills, transmit values, social integration, replace family functions • Manifest & latent functions important

  14. Conflict Approach • View: education used by those in power to control society & maintain dominance • Teach hidden curriculum – unstated goals & values – preparation to work for the elite!

  15. Different Educational Models • The Traditional School • The Behaviorist School • The Marxist Free School

  16. Traditional School • Curriculum should be clearly outlined and all students should be moulded as far as possible to fit it

  17. Behaviourist Schools • Positive reinforcement is much more effective than negative in stimulating learning • Teachers role focuses on achieving desired goals instead of external expectations

  18. Marxist Free School • Teachers and students work together in developing individual learning programs • Each student decides what they want to learn and the teachers aid the students in achieving their goals
