  1. Goal Setting What do you want to accomplish?

  2. What is a Goal? • You set a goal whenever you say, "I want to..." Your goal might be that you want to get a pet dog, that you want to learn to dance, or to play football well. At school, your goal might be to get better grades at school.

  3. Why are Goals important? • When you have a goal, it makes you feel full of energy. • Having a goalmakes you feel good about yourself. • It makes life much more FUN!!!

  4. When is a Goal a good Goal? • It's always good to have a goal, but there are ways to make goal-setting most effective. effective: producing a result that is wanted; having an intended effect

  5. Smart Goals • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Realistic • Timely

  6. Specific • A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. specific: clearly and exactly presented or stated; precise or exact

  7. Specific • To set a specific goal you must answer the “W” questions: • What? What do I want to accomplish? • When? When do I plan to accomplish the goal? • Why? Why am I setting this goal?

  8. Measurable • Decide how you will be measuring progress toward the goal you set. • To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as…… • How much? • How many? • How will I know when it is accomplished?

  9. Measurable • When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the joy of achievement that helps you continue to reach your goal!

  10. Attainable • When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. • You develop the attitudes, abilities, and skills to reach them. • You begin seeing opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goal.

  11. Realistic • To be realistic, a goal must be something you are both willing and able to do. • You are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be, but be sure that every goal helps you make progress.

  12. Realistic • Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished. • Think about… • Have you ever accomplished anything similar in the past? • What conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal?

  13. Timely • A goal should have a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there’s no sense of urgency. • “Someday” won’t work! If you write your goal with a time, “by the end of the 2nd quarter”, then you’ve set your mind into motion to begin working on the goal. ___ to ____ by _____________________

  14. What if I don't get my Goal first time? • It doesn't matter! • Mr. Edison, the man who invented light bulbs, tried thousands of ways to make light bulbs before he found a way that worked! • And each time he tried something and it didn't work, Mr. Edison said "I've learned another way not to make a light bulb!" • He was happy because he had learned something. Then he tried a NEW way until he got his Goal of making a light bulb!

  15. Remember… • Always look for what you can LEARN when something doesn't work! • NEVER, EVER give up! You WILL get your goalin the end!

  16. Important quotes to remember • “ The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.” ~ Benjamin Mays

  17. Important quotes to remember • “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” ~Neil Armstrong

  18. Important Quotes to Remember • “I've worked too hard and too long to let anything stand in the way of my goals. I will not let my teammates down and I will not let myself down.” ~Mia Hamm
