  21. Zunh Doz/Sermon “ I ” Fear the LORD Yie Gengh Taaih Ziouv Deuteronomy 10:12;6:2;13:4 Yauzsing Zeuz

  22. The Fear of the LORD Introduction: Why should you and I fear God? For the Israelites, “The LORD your God requires from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deut. 10:12). God has bestowed many favors upon them, forgave them of their sins, and promised them of their possession of the land of Canaan. What does it mean to fear the LORD? The fear of the Lord includes an awe for His greatness and holiness, love for Him, and submission to His will. Initially, the fear of God may involve fright. Yet it leads to a sense of wonder, a commitment to worship, and delight in knowing God.

  23. The Fear of the LORD A. We are commanded to fear the LORD 1. The Lord requires His chosen people, Israel, to fear him (Deut. 6:2; 10:12). Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good. (Deut. 13:4; Ps. 2:11) 2. God is the object of our fear (Isa. 8:13) “It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread.) If the people want to be frightened, they should be frightened of God. If they want to respond to God correctly, they should treat His name with awe and fear Him 3. We understand fear through scripture (Prov. 2:3-5). When a person seeks wisdom, he or she finds it in the fear of the Lord, or the knowledge of God. Those who know God fear and revere Him. 4. Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. (Ps. 33:8)

  24. The Fear of the LORD B. We benefit from fearing the LORD 1. The fear of God provides advantages (Prov. 15:16  Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and turmoil with it (19:23). The fear of the LORD leads to life, So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Prov. 1:7; 9:10) 2. The fear of God provides a fountain of life (Prov. 14:27) The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death.) The fear of the LORD prolongs life(Prov. 10:27). 3. The fear of God provides purity (Ps. 19:9)  The fear of the LORD is clean. It causes believers to obey God and live righteous lives. 4. The fear of God provides protection “The eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy”. (Ps. 33:18; 34:7)  The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.

  25. The Fear of the LORD C. We react in a certain way when we fear the LORD 1. We turn away from evil (Job 1:1) There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil. 2. We obey God rather than man (Ex. 1:17-21). But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them. We envy not the sinners (Prov. 23:17). 3. We have hatred for evil (Prov. 8:13). “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth I hate). We put away the gods (Josh. 24:14). “Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD). 4. We praise Him (Ps. 22:23). You who fear the LORD, praise Him). We will stand in awe of Him (Ps. 33:8). Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

  26. The Fear of the LORD D. We are not to fear “___________” when we fear the LORD. 1. We are not to fear man but God (Prov. 29:25) The fear of man brings a snare. (Isa. 8:12-13) It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread) 2. We are not to fear other gods (2 Kings 17:37-38) You shall not fear other gods…But the LORD your God you shall fear. 3. We are not to fear evil (Ps. 23:4).  I fear no evil, for You are with me. 4. The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life, whom shall I dread? (Ps. 27:1) Nothing! 

  27. Application of Principle to Practice: 1. We are commanded to fear the LORD. We fear Him because we recognize Him as Lord, because He created us, because of His greatness and holiness, because of our love for Him. 2. There are many examples of God-fearers in the Bible: Abraham (Gen. 22:12), Joseph (Gen. 39:9/ 42:18), Obadiah ( 1 King 18:12), Nehemiah (Neh. 5:15), Job (Job 1:1,8), Noah (Heb. 11:2), & Christians (Acts 9:3). 3. When we choose to fear God and submit to His will, He makes provisions for us. We will respond in ways that honor Him, and we will have nothing to fear. 4. Whom or what do you fear? Isaiah said, “It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread” (Is. 8:13)
