  3. What is the meaning of Christian Suffering • Suffering is an experience of physical pain and/or mental distress. • It can show the presence and reality of injustices and persecution in the world.

  4. Why were Christians persecuted in the Roman Empire? TWO MAJOR REASONS WHY CHRISTIANS WERE PERSECUTED? • Christianity was a monotheistic (believing in one God) religion. ---Christians were honestly militant about not doing anything that would even imply that there were any other gods than God.

  5. Why were Christians persecuted in the Roman Empire? TWO MAJOR REASONS WHY CHRISTIANS WERE PERSECUTED? • Christianity was a monotheistic (believing in one God) religion. ---Christians held firmly to the idea that all gods other than theirs were false gods and should not be worshipped.

  15. What does the suffering and persecution tell about Jesus’ followers? • IT IS LOVE FOR GOD AND OTHER PEOPLE THAT APOSTLES CONTINUED TO DO THE MISSION.

  16. When did the Christians suffer many persecutions? • Christians were persecuted by the Roman emperors during the second century. • Persecution was sporadic (OCCASSIONALY) throughout the second century.

  17. When did the Christians suffer many persecutions? • A particularly harsh persecution broke out in North Africa during the reign of Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) • Perpetua and Felicity met their end in the Roman Ampitheater. They were thrown to wild beasts.

  18. When did the Christians suffer many persecutions? • In 251, the Roman Emperor Decius inaugurated the first empire-wide persecution, ordering every single man, woman, and child in the entire empire to sacrifice to the gods on pain of death.

  19. How did Christianity change from persecuted sect to state religion in the Roman Empire • In A.D 306, Constantine became the Roman Emperor. • He had a conversion during his battle for the leadership in Rome. • “IN THIS SIGN, YOU WILL CONQUER”(IN HOC SIGNE VINCES)

  20. How did Christianity change from persecuted sect to state religion in the Roman Empire • He ordered his soldiers to put the symbol of the cross on their shields and battle flags. • Constantine pronounced Christianity as a religion and this ended the persecution.
