  1. Writing and Solving Proportions! Section 8.4, pg 387

  2. A proportion is an equation that states that two ratios are equivalent. What is a proportion?

  3. To solve an equivalent ratio, another word for proportion, you break it down into 2 steps. 1. Ask yourself: What number can you multiply 40 by to get 80? Solving Proportions

  4. 2. Once that number is found, apply the same multiplication to the top number… And then you have your answer!

  5. REMEMBER to ALWAYS include the unit you are measuring!

  6. 1. Write the original proportion. 2. Multiply each side by the denominator that is under the variable we are looking for. 3. Simplify Solving Proportions algebraically.

  7. Let’s try some on our own! Solving more Proportions

  8. Yesterday Morgan bought 6 apples for $18. Today she wants to buy 10 apples. How much will 10 apples cost her? • Create a table Setting up a proportion

  9. Ryan is riding the elevator in the Empire State Building. On the elevator, he can pass 80 floors in 45 seconds. How many floors can he pass in 9 seconds? • Create a table • Write the proportion Setting up a proportion

  10. Alexis is baking cookies. The recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar for 12 cookies. How many cookies can she make if she uses 8 cups of sugar?

  11. Brandon has a dog walking business and he is able to walk 8 dogs in 2 hours. How many hours will is take him to walk 24 dogs?

  12. Another way to solve proportions is by using cross products. • Write the proportion • Multiply or divide the numerator of the first proportion by the denominator of the second proportion. • Get the variable on one side and then simply to find what the variable equals. Cross Products

  13. Kelia is at the giraffe pen at the zoo. She observes that there are 15 adult giraffes for every 9 baby giraffes. How many baby giraffes would there be if there were only 5 adult giraffes?

  14. Weston is has a brand new car. He has driven 400 miles in 6 hours. How many hours did it take him to drive 100 miles?

  15. Austin is researching a historic Viking ship. The ratio of the width to length of the ship was 3:20. If the ship had a length of 80 feet, what was its width?

  16. Adisson can read 2200 words in 10 minutes. How many words can she read in 1 hour?

  17. And now you know about Solving Proportions!
