  3. The Roaring Twenties the 1920’s: After World War One - people moved into the cities in hopes to make money in the industrial market; business was booming Agricultural workers (American Farmers) were neglected

  4. Economic Boom: The Automobile Industry

  5. Economic Depression When an economy slows down due to a financial crisis (drop in spending) causing: -businesses to fail -high rates of unemployment -lower production

  6. Stock Market Crash of 1929 ***Remember: Stock is when someone invests their money in a company/business People started pulling their money out of the market and selling their stock… Why? -consumers were in debt because of easy credit -steel production and construction jobs were declining -car sales were down The citizens could see things were going bad so EVERYONE started pulling their money out of the market! *

  9. Income Inequality •In 1929 21% of families made under $1,000 •21% made $1,000 - $5,000 •2.3% made over $10,000 •Halfof people live below the poverty level*

  10. Stock Market Crash -Stock Market Crashed on “Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929* -Many people lost all of their money* -People were buying stock on “margin” -10% cash, 90% financed -Stock value went down sharply*

  11. Debt •During the 1920’s people purchased many, many things on credit. Pay part now, make payments later. •People could no longer afford to make the payments and ended up in debt •This was particularly hard on farmers

Effects of the Great Depression -FDR’s New Deal: Jobs that put America back to work -Banks/Stock Market developed strict trading regulations to prevent another crash -Government power and regulations grew stronger -Immigration of people from rural to urban areas due to drought conditions (the dust bowl) -Citizens learned to live on very little and developed ways to save money and live cheaply
