  1. Inquiry Learning How to teach the Pythagorean theorem using inquiry learning

  2. What is Inquiry? • Seeking information through questioning and/or research. • Students are involved in their learning.

  3. Why Use Inquiry? • Students are in control of their learning. • Students can go at their own pace. • Group work can be involved. • Math manipulatives are helpful (hands on learning). • Differentiation is easy to incorporate.

  4. Pythagorean Theorem and Inquiry • My math lesson • How can I adapt this lesson to make in more of an inquiry lesson? • Example questions

  5. Example Questions • What type of triangle do the squares create? How do you know this? • What are the properties of this triangle? • How can we use the areas of each square to find the area of the triangle? • What is the relationship between the three sides of the triangle? • Can you come to a conclusion about a formula to solve a problem like this?

  6. Conclusion • Inquiry learning is beneficial to students. • Downfall is that it is sometimes more work for teachers. • Differentiation is easy to include. • This is used in all subject areas in a variety of ways.
