  1. Multi-lateration Trials in Italy Action 27.6 Provide results of Malpensa & Rome multi-lateration trials. • Riccardo Delise

  2. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Status of multi-lateration trials in Italy There are three projects: Milano Malpensa Milano Linate Roma Fiumicino

  3. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Multilateration system is one of the sensors of A-SMGCS (Advanced-Surface Movement and Ground Control Systems). It obtains surveillance data to be combined with other sensors (e.g. SMR, primary Surface Movement Radars) and provide data redundancy and information to unambiguously identify and track aircraft or vehicles equipped with an operational ATC transponder or equivalent.

  4. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy AMS Company Multilateration system in Rome Fiumicino and Milano Malpensa airports. Design aspects

  5. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy a)Overall system architecture and Synchronization of the different stations b)Algorithms to measure the Time Of Arrival (TOA) of the replies/squitters c)Algorithms to estimate the target position in 3D by four or more TOA measurements d) Design and simulation tool development to verify each specific installation performance.

  6. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy a)Overall system architecture and Synchronization of the different stations • Receiver Units (RXUs) installed in or around the Coverage Area • Interrogator Units (TXUs) installed in or around the Coverage Area • Interrogator and Receiver Antennas • A Central Processor Facility (CPF) associated to the previous Interrogators/Receivers units • A synchronisation system for TOA Alignment composed by SGUs (Squitter Generator Units) • A Local Monitoring and Display Traffic (LMDT) • Configuration and Maintenance Unit (CMU)

  9. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy b) Algorithms to measure the Time Of Arrival (TOA) of the replies/squitters. Sensor reply processing allows an accurate reply Time Of Arrival computation. The TOA estimation technique is based on an enhanced and unique operation; it implements the carrier sampling of the replies received by the RF sub-unit, so directly achieving fully digital signal information. The digitalized replies, pulse by pulse, are analyzed both in shape and level.

  10. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy b) Algorithms to measure the Time Of Arrival (TOA) of the replies/squitters. (Cont.) Each single pulse is processed through a digital unit composed by a filters chain with three main modules: adaptive filter (pulse recognizing), diverter (zero-crossing) and interpolator (TOA estimation). In this way Multilaterations Sensors simulation and tests showed a TOA accuracy estimation in the order of one nanosecond.

  11. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy c) Algorithms to estimate the target position in 3D by four or more TOA measurements Target position estimation is obtained by simultaneous reception of a target transponder signal by three (or more) ground sensors. The differences between these reception times and a common reception time permit to estimate the target position, by means of multilateration algorithms. .

  12. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy c) Algorithms to estimate the target position in 3D by four or more TOA measurements (Cont.) Central Processor Facilitiy uses the formed Time Difference of Arrival for a specific target in an ad-hoc mix of weighted all-in-view sensor non-iterative and iterative position estimation algorithms; this procedure allows to obtain the highest position accuracy in the lowest computation time while maximizing the continuity of target plot generation .

  13. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy - d) Design and simulation tool development to verify each specific installation performance - MXP Best HDOP for North Zone

  14. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy - d) Design and simulation tool development to verify each specific installation performance - MXP Best HDOP for South Zone

  15. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa A-SMGCS is implemented in the frame of EMMA. EMMA (European Airport Movement Management by A-SMGCS) is a project of the 6th Framework program of the European Commission (EC).

  16. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa - It will use existing products and will focus on the surveillance and alerting level 1(Surveillance alone) and level 2 (Level 1+ Situation Monitoring/Alerting (instead of “Control”)) - According to EMMA project that should be the basis for the future level 3 (guidance ) and level 4 (route planning)

  17. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy

  18. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa - Installation of 9 sensors has been completed. 1 sensor to be installed. (formal authorization released) - Now the integrated system includes: • SMR(Surface Movement Radar) • Approach Radar • Vehicle Management System based on ADS-B via WLAN.

  19. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa Such system should ensure continuity on the track for the aircraft. Sensor data fusion has to be improved. Moreover sometime due to the normal procedure on board to switch off the Transponder, the label disappears on ground.

  20. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa • 1090ES ADS-B system stand alone. - MLAT (Multilateration) still stand alone integration to be completed. - Data fusion with other system to be completed. - The target is the integration by full Sensor data fusion together with 1090ES ADS-B and MLAT.

  21. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Malpensa On the A-SMR display aircraft are shown as dot symbols with track dots and labels, vehicles are shown as cross symbols also with track dots and labels. << The integration of the MLAT receiving station is in due course Functions of the system have been optimized in order to manage and process data coming from more than 300 targets each second simultaneously in the coverage area while guaranteeing the fastest computation time with the best target position accuracy.

  22. Multi-lateration Trials in Italy Roma Fiumicino Manufacturer Alenia Marconi System. Including 18 antenna sensors on the airport site. Integration test in due course

  23. Multi-lateration Trials in Italy - FCO

  24. Multi-laterationTrials in Italy Milano Linate Manufacturer: THALES. Including 8 antenna sensors on the airport site Integration test in due course.
