  1. The PNS Objectives: Describe the functions of the sensory division of the peripheral nervous system. Describe the functions of the motor division of the peripheral nervous system.

  2. PNS Vocabulary (One vocab, one notes, one for vocab sheet) • somatic nervous system • reflex arc • autonomic nervous system • homeostasis

  3. Review • What are the two organs of the CNS? • What does CNS stand for? • What part of the brain is the location of learning, intelligence, and judgment?

  4. Review • What are the three different types of neurons called? • What part of the neuron receives signals? • What are the working cells of the specific immune system.

  5. The PNS • The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is our link to the outside world. • It is divided into two major categories: The sensory division and the motor division

  6. The Sensory Division • The sensory division transmits impulses TO the brain. • Sensory receptors are cells that transmit information about changes in the environment to the brain.

  7. FOR YOUR NOTES

  8. The Motor Division • The motor division transmits impulses from the CNS to muscles and glands. • The Motor division has two divisions: The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.

  9. Somatic Nervous System • Somatic nervous system – under conscious control • Conscious control means that you are voluntarily doing something.

  10. Reflexes • A reflex is a rapid response. • Reflex arc - the pathway that a reflex impulse travels.

  11. The Reflex Arc The pathway is as follows: 1. A sensory receptors stimulate a sensory neuron. 2. The impulse travels to the spinal cord. 3. An interneuron in the spinal cord interprets the impulse. 4. An impulse is then sent through a motor neuron to muscles that pull your limb out of danger.

  12. The Autonomic Nervous System • Autonomic nervous system – regulates activities that are NOT under conscious control • There are two divisions of the Autonomic nervous: • The sympathetic • and the parasympathetic

  13. Homeostasis • Homeostasis – a stable environment • Your nervous system helps to keep your body in homeostasis. • Your heart rate and breathing are both controlled by the autonomic nervous system

  14. Vocab Sheet Terms • Somatic Nervous System • Autonomic Nervous System • Reflex Arc • Homeostasis
