  1. Weather Unit E in our textbooks Video Intro 15:00

  2. Air E10-11 • mixture of gases that take up space and have weight • Nitrogen = 78% • Oxygen = 21% • Carbon Dioxide, water vapor, etc. = 1%

  3. Gases’ Importance to Life E10-11 • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) - plants use to make food • Oxygen (O2) – Humans breathe it in • Nitrogen – bacteria makes it useful for plants • Water vapor – makes rain (helps plants grow)

  4. Atmosphere E12-13 • Thermosphere • Mesosphere • Stratosphere • TROPOSPHERE***(where weather happens) Orange = Thermosphere Pink = Mesosphere Yellow = Stratosphere Sky Blue = troposphere

  5. Weather vs. Climate E13; E86-91 • WEATHER = condition of atmosphere (troposphere) at a certain place and time • CLIMATE = weather conditions over a LONG period of time

  6. 3 Climate Categories E 86-91 • Polar – temperature usually below freezing • Temperate – warm, dry summers & cold, wet winters • Tropical – hot and rainy all year Video 15:00

  7. Greenhouse Effect E14-15 • heat builds up near Earth’s surface and is trapped by the atmosphere • pollution increases it and may be causing global warming Video 24:00

  8. Wind E20-22 • As air is warmed, the particles spread farther apart (Hot Air Balloons). • Warm air RISES; Cool air SINKS • Wind = movement of air Video 3:24

  9. Wind Tools E38-41 • To find DIRECTION: • Wind vane • Wind sock • To find SPEED: • Anemometer – tool with four cups that spin • Beaufort Scale – measures wind speed from 2-12

  10. Air Pressure E30-33 • Air Pressure – push of air against its surroundings • Barometer – measures air pressure • Cooler air=higher pressure; Warmer air=lower pressure Video 13:00

  11. Humidity E46-47 • Humidity – amount of water vapor in the air (changes from day to day) • Sweat = cooling system; As it evaporates (changes from a liquid to a gas), it cools your body. * When the humidity is high, it doesn’t evaporate as easily, and therefore, you feel hotter. Video 3:39

  12. Precipitation E44-48 • Clouds form when water vapor condenses(changes from a gas to a liquid). *When the drops are heavy enough, they fall to Earth. • Precipitation – any form of water that falls from the air (rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc.) • Rain Gauge – tool used to measure amount of precipitation Video 15:01

  13. TYPES OF CLOUDSE55-57 • Cumulus – tall and puffy – look like cauliflower • Stratus – FLAT, gray blankets • Cirrus – wispy – look like commas

  14. Prefixes for Cloud Names E57 • Nimbo- = RAIN • Cirro- = HIGH • Alto- = MEDIUM Video 15:00

  15. Forecasting E54; 62-65 • Weather satellites – devices in space that take pictures of clouds and collect weather information Weather forecasters- person who makes predictions about the weather using maps and images from the satellites Video 15:00

  16. Fronts E64-65 • Front–place where two different types of air masses meet • Warm front = warm moves into cool (light rain) • Cold front = cold moves into warm (thunderstorms) Video 4:30

  17. Storms E68-70 • Thunderstorm – storm with heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder • Flash Flood – sudden and violent floods Video 15:00

  18. Hurricanes/Tornadoes E71-74 • Hurricanes – large violent storms that form over warm ocean water (winds at least 74 mph) • Tornado – funnel-shaped storm of upward spinning wind Video 15:00 Video 15:00

  19. Seasons E78-83 1 rotation about Earth’s axis = 1 day (24 hours) 1 revolution around the sun = 1 year (365 ¼ days) Revolution is when the earth travels around the sun. After 365 days, it’s done! Rotation is when the earth takes a spin. After 24 hours, a new day can begin.

  20. Seasons E78-83 • SEASONS occur because Earth is TILTED on its AXIS Video 26:00

  21. Weather Fun Field Trip Mrs. Frizzle Style Video 29:24
