  1. PM&R in 1,2,3 American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation 1 What is PM&R? Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, PM&R, became one of twenty-four official medical specialties in 1947. PM&R physicians, physiatrists, specialize in the care of patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders, aiming to reduce pain and improve function in their patients. Physiatrists work in a variety of settings and with a broad range of patients. Physiatrists may use medication, physical therapy, exercise, education and more to achieve this goal. In addition, as future DOs, we add osteopathic manipulations to this list. “Doctors add years to life, physiatrists add life to years.” 2 What can I expect from a PM&R residency? The PM&R residency is a 3-year program that is preceded by a 1-year internship. This may be followed by a fellowship in sports medicine, electromyography, pain medicine, spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries among many others. Where can I learn more about PM&R? 3 Join the AOCPMR and attend: This conference is specifically designed for medical students interested in the field of PM&R and will feature: THE NATIONAL PM&R Student Conference • Overview of PM&R as a specialty • PM&R residency panel • Hands-on PM&R clinical workshop • Advice from Residency Program Directors • Lunch with attending and resident physiatrists   • Student research presentations • Networking, and more!!
