  1. Bill Nye the Science Guy Energy Video Cloze Notes When you push a button to open or close a door, you are using _electrical_________energy. Energy comes in all different forms like _sound_________ energy, _____heat_____ energy, ___mechanical___energy (when we move our muscles), __motion_______ is energy. Energy can be converted from one _form_____ to another. Energy is what makes things _go__, __move__; or __happen_______. When we filled this box, we lifted the water up and gave it some _potential_____. Lifting takes work, and work is energy. When we lift water, the energy of lifting I stored up here (in the box). When we open this valve, water flows down hill, runs this little propeller, the propeller spins and runs a little generator which makes a small amount of _electricity____. It runs through this‑_wire_________ and makes the needle move. Some of our ‑_electricity_________is made by ‑__falling____________water from huge____dams_______ that have huge __turbines_____________. When energy is stored (like the water in the box), we call it __potential__________. It has the __potential______ to do something. When it’s moving, we call it __kinetic___________ energy. kinetic____________ energy means moving. This set-up (the box filled with water with a tube running downhill); converts _potential_____ energy to __kinetic_______ energy; the energy of the flow, and the flowing water makes _electrical______ energy. Energy was changed (transformed) from one form of _energy_________ to another. Energy is everywhere____. As I wind up this propeller, the rubber band stores energy that _energy_____________ can be _released_________, making the _airplane____________ fly. If you make a rocket, you can see how energy makes things _go________. Add ½ cup vinegar to ½ cup water, then put 1 teaspoon of baking soda onto a coffee filter. Roll it up and twist the ends really tight. Put the coffee filter in the bottom of the bottle, put the cork on as tightly as you can and step away and watch. The –baking soda___ and ‑_vinegar__ caused a _chemical__________ reaction that builds up pressure inside the bottle. The cork pops off because the ‑_potential__ energy changed to moving ‑_energy______. It changes form. Energy makes things _go_______. Right now, this bowling ball has _energy__________. It’s not moving, but it’s got _potential energy_____ (bowling ball on a rope swings back and forth). When we pull the ball back to the middle, it had potential energy. When we move it, it has _kinetic______. The _kinetic____ energy will never be bigger than the ‑_potential____________energy. __electricity___________ is a form of energy. A lot of it is released from burning coal. The coal makes heat, the heat makes _steam_______ and the steam is running this small turbine__. The __turbine__ is actually an electrical ___generator____________. This is the same way it works in real _coal__ __plants________. We can use the _energy__ of falling water to make _electricity_____. The falling water spins a giant turbine, it’s like a big paddle wheel, and that runs and electric _charge______ so you can make electricity so you can watch the show. Nuclear power comes from _atoms_________. There is energy in the wind, too. _wind__________ turns windmills, the spinning blades turn electrical generators. The wind is turned directly into _energy___________. The _sun_____ is beaming energy to the _earth_____ all day and all night. Solar panels collect energy. Barrel energy experiment- The bungee cords in the center of the barrel remain still or in place because the heavy sandbag in the center of the cord holds the cord while the barrel is moving. The ends of the bungee cord twist while storing energy in the rubber. The barrel first is pushed forward but rolls back on its own because the stored energy in the rubber turns to kinetic energy. The _batteries which moves this toy changes the energy stored in the toy’s batteries into _electrical__ energy. This _turbine________ changes the energy from plain old water into _electric_____ energy. One of the big sources of energy that we use is oil. Oil is one of the __fossil_ __fuels________ that is pumped out of the ground. Oil is a chemical we combine with oxygen in the air to produce heat which produces energy. The energy stored in this _log_ is changed into _heat______ and _light____ energy while the logs are burned (logs combusting or burning is a chemical change). We store energy in ourselves by eating food. The energy___ we get from food began as light energy from the _sun_______. Right now (bill Nye is playing racket ball), I’m using a lot of chemical energy I get from _food_______. Energy is what makes things go, _move__________, or __happen__ (it’s the ability to do work). Energy can be converted from one form to another. That’s what happens when we get __chemical____ energy from the food we eat into the energy of _motion________. Some ends up as ‑_heat______. These big black bungee cords (on a bungee ride at an amusement park) are storing energy. When they let go, it becomes _kinetic______________ energy.
