The Movement of the Ocean

The Movement of the Ocean. Chapter 24. Surface Currents. Generally flow in the upper 1000 meters of the ocean Are driven by wind and the coriolis effect Can affect weather all over the globe. Warm currents flow away from the equator. Cold currents flow toward the equator.

  1. The Movement of the Ocean Chapter 24

  2. Surface Currents • Generally flow in the upper 1000 meters of the ocean • Are driven by wind and the coriolis effect • Can affect weather all over the globe

  3. Warm currents flow away from the equator Cold currents flow toward the equator

  4. Surfce Currents • The flow of the currents is very similar to how winds blow all over the world. Winds blow form high pressure to low pressure. • Surface currents move from an area of high density (cold) to an area of less density (warm).

  5. Density Currents • These are driven by gravity and density differences • The densest waters come from polar regions • This is due to freezing Global Conveyor Belt
