  3. MEANING • EARTH QUAKES : a sudden and violent movement or fracture within the earth’s crust followed by a series of shocks is called an earthquake. The movement is sudden and abrupt and short-lived but it causes a lot of damage.

  4. CAUSES FOR EARTHQUAKES • The colliding of continental and oceanic plates causes earthquakes. • Violent and explosive volcanoes can cause destructive earthquakes. • Minor causes of earthquakes are collapse of underground caves, landslides and man-made causes such as dams which causes a sudden rush of water and disturbs the rocks.

  5. MERACALLI SCALE • In1897 the Assam earthquAKE had a magnitude of 8.7. In 1960 the Chile eaarthquke had magnitude of 8.9 , the highest yet recorded. • Seismologists use the seismograph to measure the intensity of earth quake waves. It is a highly sensitive device to detect the slightest vibration of earth’s crust.

  6. seismography • The RICHTER scale measures the magnitude of an earthquake. It is logarithmic and open ended. It ranges from 0-8.9, the largest earthquake, yet recorded. the richter scale readings are taken on a Seismograph.

  7. Survive from Earth quakes • Beware of falling building and flying object • Don’t go outside till the shaking stop completely • Go to higher ground if you are near the coastal area • Stand under a door frame or crouch under a table or chair or bed untill quakes stops
