Main objectives of the meeting Present and discuss recent EEA products and projects as well as the perspectives for the incoming year around the SEBI2010 process in view to improve future indicator developments in support of up-coming major assessments (e.g.SOER2010). The need to have extended spatial and temporal data coverage will be debated as will be the role of networks, platforms and facilities operating within SEIS objectives. The main lines for the meeting will be: • From the 2010 target up to a post-2010 vision • From indicators (the SEBI2010 process) to assessments • How networks may support the EEA MDIAK chain within the SEIS objectives Interactions between EEA/NRC, new topics for discussion, involvement between meetings

  3. Rationale behind the Agenda • The Biodiversity issues in the perspective of EEA 2009-2013 Strategy - a year in review. The SEBI2010 - Main results and outputs at European and national levels Biodiversity indicators - 2 to 3 selected country experiences • The Post 2010 vision and target and implications for 2010 and post-2010 EEA products SEBI2010 and the support to the Biodiversity Action Plan reporting SEBI as a key process in a post 2010 frame - discussion on features required • Major assessments in 2010 (SOER2010, Astana, EURECA) - implications for NRCs Mobilising data and information - Contribution to EEA assessment activities • On going monitoring and assessment initiatives (at global, European and regional scales - e.g.GBIF, GEObon, LifeWatch, LTER, EBONE, EPA and ENCA, CAFF networks) - streamlining efforts at national level.

Obj 1 – Ensuring continuous access to high quality environmental information and services – Env & cross-cutting themes + jnfo systems • Obj 2 – producing integrated environmental assessments and forward studies for Europe - IEA • Obj 3 – Adressing critical env. priorities as they arise on the policy agenda • Obj 4 – improve communications and dissemination through diverse channels

  5. Key actions 2009-20132009 • Launch the 5 data centres with concrete information services • EEA supporting infrastructure to SEIS, GMES and Inspire • COP15 meeting in CPH

  6. Key actions 2009-20132010 • SOER2010 • Report on the Biodiversity 2010 target • Establish a vulnerability and adaptation mapping service for disaster management in Europe

  7. Key actions 2009-20132011 • Astana Report • Complete a cost of inaction study – market and non market damage to ecosystems services and human welfare

  8. Key actions 2009-20132012 • EURECA 2012 • Revise status of water and marine environments through WISE and EMODNET

  9. Key actions 2009-20132013 • Revise and plan for next phase of GMES • Develop the next 5 year EEA strategy

STRATEGIC AREAS • Environmental Themes (air quality, air pollutant and emissions, biodiversity, GHG emissions, freshwater, marine) • Cross Cutting Themes (CC impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, ecosystems, env & health, Maritime, SCP & waste, land use, Agri and forests, Energy and transport) • Integrated Environmental assessment (IEA, Reg&Global assessments, Decision support, Economics, strategic futures) • Information systems and communications (SEIS, Communications)

  11. 1.3 BiodiversityMain lines of work in 2009 To provide continued support to the European Commission and Member States on implementation of the EU Habitats and Birds Directive. To build further the Biodiversity data centre and other information systems for biodiversity based on SEIS principles. To promote results from SEBI2010 and strengthen its focus on ecosystem services. To implement relevant building blocks for SOER 2010 assessment and Eureca 2012 developments. Two connected-areas: 2.3. Ecosystem Services 2.8. Agriculture and Forests
