  2. Madame Schachter From quiet to deadly screams? What would you do if you were separated from your family?

  3. Madame’s ‘before’ Characterization Quiet when she is deported in the same train car as Elie. “A quiet women with tense, burning eyes.” (p.22)

  4. Madame’s ‘before’ Characterization Was a family friend. “She had often been to our house” (p.22)

  5. Madame’s ‘after’ Characterization Began to gocrazy on the train ride. “She had already begun to moan and to keep asking why she had been separated from her family” (p.22)

  6. Madame’s ‘after’ Characterization She began strangely seeing images of fire outside the of the car. “Jews, listen to me! I can see a fire! There are huge flames! It is a furnace!” (p.23)

  7. Madame’s ‘after’ Characterization She became an outcast (like Moshe the Beadle). “Madame Schachterstayed in her corner, wilted, dumb, indifferent to the general confidence.” (p.24)

  9. Juliek’s ‘before’ characterization A bright kid among the prisoners. “Juliek, a bespectacled pole with a cynical smile on his pale face” (p.47)

  10. Juliek’s ‘before’ characterization Had a decent job in the prison. “Juliek explained to me: “we work in a warehouse for electrical equipment, not far from here. The work isn’t in the least difficult or dangerous”(pg.47)

  11. Juliek’s‘after’ characterization Elie was separated but eventually found Juliek once again. Who was still a enthusiastic musician. “Juliek! The boy from Warsaw who played the violin in the band at Buna..”(pg.89)

  12. Juliek’s ‘after’ characterization His violin = His life “I’m afraid… I’m afraid.. That they’ll break my violin… I’ve brought it with me.”(pg.89)

  13. Juliek’s ‘after’ characterization Remained a inspirationally passionate man to his young death… “The sound of a violin, in this dark shed, where the dead were heaped on the living.” (pg. 90)

  14. Idek A Violent Kapo (Lead Prisoner) that beat Jews for no reason.

  15. Idek’s Characterization (quote #1) “He leapt on me like a wild beast, hitting me in the chest, on the head, throwing me down and pulling me up again, his blows growing more and more violent, until I was covered in blood.” (Pg. 50)

  16. Quote #1 Continued • Death camps gave the kapos a measure of power. • Many kapos (Idek) abused the power.

  17. Idek’s Characterization (quote #2) “He seized me by the throat… he said, ‘You wait and, see kid . . . You'll soon find out what leaving your work’s going to cost you. . . . You’regoing to pay for this pretty soon. . . . And now, go back to your place.” (pg. 54)

  18. Quote #2 Continued Idek had a lot of power he misused… The Nazi's turned him (and many others) savage, essentially Nazi.
