  4. Lisa Ward - Kodak • Wanted to work in Operational Research • Students who got jobs were the ‘good talkers’ • Disillusioned after second year • Stereotypes of manufacturing • Statistics work • Expanded career opportunities • Added Bonus

  7. Sandwich Degrees Take up of sandwich degrees for those registered is only around 50%

Placement Take Up Trends • UK wide trend for decrease in sandwich placement take up, confirmed anecdotally by other universities • Decrease since 1990s • Why? • The research base is inconclusive – lots of competing factors • More students living at home? • Greater financial pressure? • Peer Pressure?

  9. Initial Research (2006) - Highlights Do students who do sandwich degrees get better Degrees? Jobs? Salaries? Students from University of Huddersfield who graduated in 2004, six months after graduation (DLHE). Registered on a sandwich degree (approximately 2000 students). Comparison: • Studied over four years with one year sandwich placement • Studied full-time over three years

  10. Six Months After Graduation – Employment Statistics In our survey year 14% more graduates were in work who had done a sandwich placement.

  17. Summary In our survey students who did placements tended to get: • Better degrees • Better jobs • Better salaries BUT We can not link this directly and say this is solely because of placements. However placement tutors often say that students come back: • More mature • Ready to learn • Improved context for academic learning • More determined to do well and get a good job

  25. Extra Mile Awards 2007 • Started in 2006 • Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund Sponsored. • Nominated entirely by students • For staff members who have gone ‘the extra mile’ to ensure a positive student experience.

  26. Student Competition From concept to final piece, produce a unique award/trophy or artwork as an Extra Mile Award prize • To design and produce an individual prize • Presented to one of the top prize winners. • Needs to be non gender or age specific, and should be culturally sensitive.

  27. What Skills Will You Gain? Employability Skills Demonstrated • Problem solving • Concept development • Self promotion • Pitching to a ‘real world’ panel • Time and self management skills • Costing & budget management • Application and development of design and creative skills

  28. Launch – 10th OctoberArt and Design Network Event • You are invited to submit a proposal by 12 noon on Friday 26th October • An A4 image or sketch of the proposed award • Accompanying rationale (max 60 words) • Cost estimates • How and where the item will be made.

  29. Pitch to Client Panel – 31st October, ADA Placement Conference Up to 12 students will be selected to pitch to a client panel. All students selected to pitch will be rewarded with a £20 Calder Graphics voucher* Pitch Each student will be allocated up to 5 minutes to pitch their ideas to the panel. Project costing and production schedule need to be discussed. A portfolio can be left with the panel.

  30. Prizes and Commissioning 1st Prize: £150, 2nd Prize: £100, 3rd Prize: £50 Calder Graphics Voucher* * Or similar Commissioning • The panel will select three finalists to be commissioned to produce their award. The panel will allocate funding for design and production costs. • Commissioned pieces must be delivered by 30th November, 2007 • The judges will decide on the order of final prize winners once completed pieces have been delivered. • The judges’ decision is final. • Good luck!

Timescales and Criteria Timescales Launch: Wed 10 October Proposal Deadline: Fri 26 Oct Notification to pitch: Mon 29 Oct Pitch to Client Panel: Wed 31 Oct Commission notification: Fri 2 Nov Completion and hand in: Fri 30 Nov Awards will be presented to staff by the University Vice Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan and Pro-vice Chancellor Professor Sue Frost at the Extra Mile Awards dinner on Wed 5 Dec 2007 Commissioned students will be awarded their prizes of Calder Graphics vouchers* following submission of their completed pieces.

  32. Designs Must Be • Producible in the given time scales • Non gender or age specific • Culturally sensitive • Costed accurately • Appropriate to the end outcome, consideration should be given to • Weight, • size, • robustness • Submit proposals to: Tracy Lannon, R2/1 or Email t.a.lannon@hud.ac.uk. Successful students requested to pitch will hear from the panel by 5pm on Monday 29th October
