EC Transcript Review: • Check your transcript and graduation status frequently online through Q • Are you registered for the correct classes you need for graduation or for college admissions? • Determine your college eligibility • Subtract credits for repeated courses • Check for errors and make sure your address and phone number are correct

  4. Graduation RequirementsTotal Credits Required 220 • English 40 credits • Math 20 credits (must pass Algebra 1) • Life Science 10 credits • Physical Science 10 credits • Visual / Performing Art 10 credits • PE 20 credits • American Gov. / Econ. 5 credits each • US History 10 credits • World History 10 credits • Social Studies elective 5 credits • Health 5 credits

  6. Credit Recovery Co-Enrollment • Apex: Zero period and 7th period. Located on campus. Must attend daily and complete an online course. • El Sereno High School: Independent study, located in Fair Oaks. • Online Courses: Through fee-based providers. Must have counselor approval.

POST SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES • Career Technical Colleges—specialized training such as automotive, business, computer science, cosmetology, health care, and so on • Community College—AA degrees, Career Technical Certificates or Apprenticeship. Earn while you learn! • Community College transfer to CSU / UC programs • College / University—Baccalaureate degrees • Military / Armed Services—talk to a recruiter • Enter the workforce

College Admissions A-G Minimum Subject Requirements are: • (A) 2 years of History / Social Science • (B) 4 years of English • (C) 3 years of mathematics (through Algebra 2) • (D) 2 years of science (must be lab-based science courses) • (E) 2 years of Language other than English (LOTE) • (F) 1 year of Visual or Performing Art (VAPA) • (G) 1 year of College Prep Elective

College Entrance ExamsSAT/ACT • Exams must be completed by December of senior year for consideration at most colleges • SAT: November 5 Test, deadline October 7; December 3 Test, deadline November 3 • ACT: December 10 Test, deadline November 4 • Check each college website for their deadlines since they can vary • You must release your scores to the colleges where you are applying

Career Planning and College Major • Explore your career interests and aptitudes in Naviance • Take a Career Interest Survey and Personality Assessment • Research careers and college majors based on what you know about yourself • Then find out what education / training is required • Enroll or apply to a school / college program that offers you a major in your career field of interest

COLLEGE Applications • Visit each college website and make a master list of schools and deadlines • CSU Application filing period is October 1 through November 30, 2016 • UC Application filing period November 1 through November 30, 2016 • Students can begin working on their UC application now, but cannot file until 11/1/16

Private / Independent and Out-of-State College Applications • Most private / independent colleges use the online Common Application at www.commonapp.org • Many require a personal essay / statement • Writing the Personal Statement/UC Insight Questions Workshop will be held October 28, 4th period, library • You must check deadlines and requirements online • Letters of recommendation from your teachers, mentors, coaches and school counselor are usually required

  14. Letter of Recommendation Requests • Ask politely – Your teachers, coaches, employer, mentor and school counselor. Often they will want a resume or Letter of Recommendation Worksheet (located on the EC website, under the counseling tab) completed first to help them write the letter. • Most applications are completed online. You will need your recommenders e-mail address, and must invite them through the online application to complete the letter of recommendation • Give them time -- Three to four weeks in advance is an appropriate amount of time • Thank them -- It is very important for them to know that you appreciate the work they have done for you .

  15. California Community Colleges • Apply February-March 2016 for priority admission • Must take English and Math placement exams • To transfer from a program to a CSU/UC, visit www.assist.org • Associate Degrees and Certificate programs

College Representatives at EC • Sacramento State Rep will be on campus to meet with seniors November 15, 2016, 1st period, library • Future Hornet Day, Saturday October 8, register at www.csus.edu/admissions/future-hornet-day • ARC Rep will be on campus to meet with seniors November 8, 2nd period, library • Other College Reps: Many college reps visit EC throughout the fall. These are announced in the E-gram and School Bulletin. • Students must pre-sign up in the Counseling Office to attend these visitations

Financial Aid • Starting with the 2017-18 FAFSA students/parents can begin filing October 1, 2016 - March 2, 2017. www.fafsa.gov • Parents must use 2015 tax information, rather than 2016 information • Parents will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import tax information • Community Colleges offer Board of Governors (BOG) tuition waiver program • Scholarship information available under the college tab on Naviance • Some Private and Out-of-State colleges require the CSS/Profile in addition to the FAFSA, which can be found on the College Board website • Additional scholarship web-sites: www.fastweb.com, www.finaid.orgwww.collegeboard.com/pay, or www.studentaid.ed.gov

Financial Aid Workshops • All SJUSD students and parents can get step by step help with their financial aid applications by attending a Cash for College Workshop • San Juan High School, October 13, 6:00 p.m. • Del Campo High School, October 19, 6:00 p.m. • Encina High School, November 30, 6:00 p.m. • Other workshops in the Sacramento area can be found at www.csac.ca.gov • Sierra College also holds workshops from October –March on various days from 12-2 p.m. Flyers with all dates available in the counseling office.

  19. College Athletics • Students must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center online to be recruited for Division 1 and some Division 2 colleges www.eligibilitycenter.org • NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics): Many division 2 and 3 colleges are members of NAIA

  20. Remember… It is up to you! You don’t want to find yourself stuck without a plan after high school. Get informed! Set goals! Plan for life! PLAN!
