A civil war took place in China from the end of WWII until 1949

    • The two sides (Nationalists and Communists) had avoided conflict with each other while fighting the Japanese
    • After WWII, the Communists under Mao Zedong fought the Nationalists, who were led by Chiang Kai-Shek and were in power
      • The US supported the Nationalists
    • In 1949, the Communists took control of mainland China and the Nationalists fled to Taiwan
