  2. Ephesians 6:2-32 “Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

  3. What does it mean to honor her? • Word “honor” means • To "esteem and value as precious" (AmplifiedNT); to show respect, reverence, kindness, courtesy, and obedience (Wuest)

  4. Why honor her • Because of her teaching • Good mothers teach their children God’s word • Timothy was a blessing to his mother and to the church. • Paul said that he had no one “likeminded” (Phil. 2:19) • Why? Because Timothy was taught (2 Tim. 3:14-15)

  5. Why honor her • Because of her example • But good mothers don’t just teach by reading, but by their lives. • Two men were arguing over Bible translations… A third man jumped in and said that he liked his mother’s – she lived it.

  6. Why honor her • Because of her dedication to God (1 Sam. 1) • She has right values • Matthew 6:21 (NKJV) “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

  7. Why honor her • Because of her courage to discipline • “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother” (Prov. 29:15) • Discipline includes teaching, training and correction.

  8. Why honor her • Because of her dedication to her home • Titus 2:3-5 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things-- 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

  9. Why honor her • Because of her beauty • Inwardly • 1 Peter 3:2-4 2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. 3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel-- 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

  10. Why honor her • Because of her love, confidence and trust • “O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.” (Psalm 131:1-2)

  11. CONCLUSION • Proverbs 31:28-31 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 29 "Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all." 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.
