Esther before AhasuerusImage Discussion • We thought that the lady in the yellow dress could have fainted because her eyes are closed, and the two ladies behind her caught her before the yellow dress lady hit the floor. • We also noticed that the man in the painting could have been a king or prince because of how he is dressed and the decorative chair. • We also thought that the lady who fainted could have been a princess because we noticed a small crown on her head, but you could only see the tips of the crown because of her falling position.
Artemisia Gentileschi1593-1642 • Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome in 1593. At a young age, her father taught her and her siblings to paint. This was then when she realized her talent to paint. • After years of painting, she made her first, real work of art, Susanna and Elders. She was seventeen at the time and loved painting dearly. Since she was a girl, most people looked down upon her, for men were the ones who painted, worked, and who also did most things besides tending to the home and children. • This did not stop her though….she became the first large scale female painter, the first woman to be admitted to the Accademia dell’ Atre del Disengo in Florence, the first woman to make a living by her paintings, and the only woman artist to adopt Caravaggism, which describes an artistic style modeled after the style and technique of the Italian artist, Michelangelo da Carvaggio(1573-1610). The artists who adopted Carvaggismwere influenced by Caravaggio's harsh effects of light and shade; his unconventional, often brutal, portrayal of religious subjects; and bold, realistic handling of genre and still life. These elements were in sharp contrast to the more classical and harmonious style of his leading contemporaries. • The most special thing about her was that she was one of the best artists of the Italian Baroque or the 17th century. • She made many works of art while she was living. She died in 1642 in Naples, Italy.
Judith and Holofernes A military commander named Holoferenes was planning to destroy a Jewish settlement. Judith, a widow who lived in the settlement that the general was planning to destroy, got angry, and devised a plan to kill the general to save her people. One day, Judith tricked Holoferenes into thinking Judith was his girlfriend. When Holoferenes was drunk and asleep, Judith attacked and beheaded Holoferenes. Judith and her maid, who was always with her, brought Holofernes’s head back to the settlement, and without their general, Holofernes’s team was defeated by Judith’s “army.”
