Understanding Axes and Planes: Sagittal, Frontal, and Vertical

Learn about the three types of axes (sagittal, frontal, and vertical) and the three types of planes (sagittal, coronal, and transverse) in human movement. Discover their movements and divisions of the body.

  2. Axis and planes AXIS: axis is imaginary line about which a body rotate. There are 3 type of axis: 1.sagittal axis 2.frontal axis 3.vertical axis

  3. Sagittal axis • The line around whoch the working candyle rotate in frontal plane during mandibular movement. • Bisect the body from front o back dividing it in to left and right halves • Movements: Abduction Adduction

  4. Vertical axis • Divides the body horizontally into Superior and Inferior halves. Rotational movements usually occur in this plane. • Movements 1.rotation of extrimities. 2.axial rotation.

  5. Frontal axis • A frontal plane is perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into dorsal and ventral portions. • Movements: 1.flexion 2.extension

  6. Planes Aflat surface on which a straight line joining any two points on it would wholly lie. Three types lanes: 1.sagittal plane 2.coronal plane 3.transverse plane.

  7. Sagittal plane: A sagittal plane is perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into left and right.  Movements: 1.flexion 2.extension.

  8. Coronal planes: Acoronal or frontal plane is perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into dorsal and ventral portions. Movements: 1.Abduction 2.Adduction.

  9. Transverse plane: A transverse plane, also known as an axial plane or cross-section, divides the body into cranial and caudal portions. It is parallel to the ground, which separates the superior from the inferior, or put another way, the head from the feet. Movements: 1.flexion 2.rotation of extrimities. 3.axial rotation.
