  2. SHOW, DON’T TELL… • SDT relies on great word choice. Remember to: • 1. Use similes and metaphors • 2. Use dialogue • 3. Use sensory details • 4. Effective word choice

  3. What does specific word choice mean? • Rely on STRONG VERBS. ~Too often we focus on adjectives and adverbs being our descriptive words. Use exciting verbs instead! • Eliminate unnecessary adjectives and adverbs.

  4. For example… • The lion ferociously ate the gazelle. • OR …. • The lion devoured the gazelle.

  5. Examples, continued… ~You could say “She yawned sleepily” ~But it’s more exciting to say “Her mouth gaped open as wide as the Grand Canyon as a yawn escaped from her lips.”

  6. Examples… • The Buffalo injured the hunter. • OR… • The Buffalo gored the hunter.

  7. YOUR TURN…. (we will share!) • He was hit by the bus. • He yelled angrily at the referee. • She laughed loudly at the cartoon. • The teacher looked meanly at the student. • The dog jumped excitedly.
