History of Hip Hop Music • The roots of hip hop are found in African American and West African music. • Hip-hop has two main historical eras, the old school hip-hop era from 1970-1985 and the golden age hip-hop era from 1985-1993. • Hip hop music is a music genre typically consisting of vocal style called rap, which is accompanied with backing beats. • Hip-Hop has four core elements: emceeing, deejaying, break dancing and graffiti. • “Afrikaa Bambaataa” and “KRS1” are said to be the founders of Hip-Hop. They pronounced hip hop to be a culture, a “way of life”. • Hip hop music may be based around either live or produced music, with a clearly defined drum beat, presented either with or without vocal accompaniment. • The 1980s saw intense diversification of hip hop which developed into a more complex form. As technology evolved so did the practice of looping break into break beats.

Key Artists • Hip-Hop remains a very popular genre of music even today. • Males seem to be dominant within this industry, especially concerning artists. • This includes artists such as: Notorious B.I.G, Lil Wayne, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye West, SnoopDog etc. • Key female artists include: Lil Kim, Missy Elliot, Lauryn Hill and Ashanti.

Audience/Fans • Hip-Hop is particularly admired in America, as that is where it originated. • Demographic for a hip-hop fan: Male, 16-21, Heterosexual, Black, Varied occupations. • Though that is the stereotyped demographic of a hip-hop fan, the audience is actually much wider. • Hip-Hop is popular with women, people of all nationalities, and within many age groups. • Hip Hop has recently become more noticed in the Uk as we saw the emergence of a new genre of music, “grime” which developed from hip hop music.

Record Labels • Sony BMG:Sony BMG Music Entertainment was a global recorded music company with a roster of artists that included a wide range of both local artists and international superstars. • Def Jam:Def Jam Recordings is a United States based hip-hop record label, owned by Universal Music Group, and operates as a part of The Island Def Jam Music Group. In the UK, the label takes on the name Def Jam UK and is operated through Mercury Music Group. • Murder Inc: Founded by hip hop artist Ja Rule. Artists include Ashanti and more. • Rockafella: Founded by artist Jay-Z. Rockaffella is now very Famous for both music production and a cloth line. • Bad Boy Productions:After working at Uptown Records throughout the early 90s and after being let go from a company, Puff Daddy established Bad Boy Entertainment whose clients eventually include the late Notorious B.I.G., 112, Faith Evans, and Craig Mack.

  6. Sub Genres • Hip-Hop has many sub genres. • A popular one is Grime. It is said to be the UK’s take on Hip-Hop. Grime, like hip-hop has a main element of rap. Well known grime artists are: Giggs, Lethal Bizzle, Ghetto, Dizzee Rascal, Bashy and Wretch 32. • Another popular sub genre is Neo Soul. This is very prevailing in USA with artists like Alicia Keys and Erika Badu, however it has become more accepted in the Uk since artists such as Floetry were discovered.

  7. Competition • The Source: This is one of the most popular hip hop magazines world wide. • RWD: This magazine contains hip hop, grime, grime and more types of music. • Vibe: A very well known hip hop magazine especially in America. • XXL: Another urban hip hop magazine.
