  2. When Are We Ever Going to Use This? • How you ever wonder the probability that a rare event will occur? • For example, if police know that on average one person gets robbed at a particular parking lot every two days, what might they want to do with this information?

  3. Safety First! • Let’s take the example of someone getting robbed at a particular parking lot every two days. • Does this fit a Poisson distribution? • A rare event. • Happening over an interval. • Why might we want to use probability in this situation? • Would you want a police officer to just guess at when a robbery might occur?

  4. Your Turn! • You are a member of the L.A PD. • Gang violence has been a major issue in your community. • Suppose on average, 1 gang related shooting occurs every 12 hours. • Let’s figure out what we can do to stop this problem!

  5. Discussion Questions • How might the L.A PD use this information? • Do you think these statistics are beneficial for the police department? • Would it be a good idea for a police department to hire statisticians? • What else might a Poisson distribution be used for?
