  2. Introduction of the Team • Tiffany Bond: Project Manager • Kevin Coble: Research Analyst & Accountant • James Karnes: Research Analyst

Introduction of Proposal • Our projects main function is to promote good health and wellness among the younger generation. • The secondary goal is to bring some type of physical education back into the middle schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg and hopefully to also bring it back to high schools.

  4. This project has five distinct aims • Assess the obesity rate of middle school aged students due to lack of physical education and activity • Assess the variation in classroom performance as to whether physical activity will increase or decrease academic aptitude • Develop a program that will be utilized in one lower income and high risk middle school as a pilot program • Develop a partnership with a local as well as national organization to assist in implementation of an activity program to decrease obesity • Develop an accepted program that once pilot is complete will be accepted and implemented among the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System

  5. Priority • Education • Utilize a middle school physical education program • Youth Development • Help motivate a healthy, active lifestyle among the students

  6. Approach & Timeline • Four Phases • Assessing the current status of Charlotte-Mecklenburg physical education/activity using secondary data and primary research • Program development, equipment purchase, instructor training • Program implementation in the trial school • Assessment of program results and presentation to the school board

  7. Beneficiaries • To start the children of Piedmont Middle School - School chosen due to hardship of students and obesity level • Once program proven successful all of Charlotte Mecklenburg School System • Statewide program instated to keep children in shape

  8. Disseminations • Brochures including a program description and benefits will be distributed to the students and parents

  9. Evaluation • Research Assistant will collect results information from the pilot school • Findings will be presented to the school board for discussion of system-wide implementation

Outcomes when Funded • Program instated within Piedmont Middle School • Decrease student obesity by physical activity • Increase student productivity in class by decreasing students being anxious • Overall increase in student end of year scores/grades while decreasing obesity • Piedmont Middle will meet First Lady Obama

  13. Conclusion • With funding we can stop childhood obesity one child at a time in Charlotte
