  4. 1. Define ‘adolescence’ and ‘puberty’ • Adolescence – period of development between childhood and adulthood; marked by the onset of puberty (begins around 11/12; ends around 18/21) • Puberty – period of time at onset of adolescence where one’s body undergoes physical/hormonal changes to prepare the body for both sexual reproduction and challenges faced in adulthood

  5. 2. Identify 3 factors that distinguish adolescence from other periods in one’s life • Education • Exclusion of youth from the labor force • Juvenile justice system separate from the adult legal system

  6. 3. Identify the 5 characteristics specific to adolescence • Biological growth/development • Undefined status/expectations aren’t clear • Increased decision-making responsibilities • Increased pressure from peers • The search for self – Who am I?

  7. 4. Define/list examples of ‘anticipatory socialization’ • Learning the rights, obligations, and expectations of roles that will be assumed in the adulthood • Examples include part-time jobs, baby-sitting, joining clubs/athletic teams, dating, a school’s tardy/dress code policy, participating in group projects
