  2. Pest Management Changes • Preventive Controls • Bt crops • Seed treatments • All seed treated with some companies • More stacked Bts (CB + RW) • Pest Monitoring • Doug Johnson and Patty Lucas • Higher input costs/grain prices • Effect of Economic thresholds?

  3. Changes in Pest Populations Less Common More common Wireworms Corn Rootworm Stink bug Soybean stem borer Armyworms Soybean aphid • Black cutworm • European corn borer • SW corn borer • Fall armyworm • Flea beetles

  5. Insects Controlled by Bt Corn

  6. Future Directions of Bt Corn • Resistance Management • Redundant Bt genes • SmartStax • New refuge strategies • AcresMax

  8. MONSANTO, DOW AGREEMENT PAVES THE WAY FOR INDUSTRY’S FIRST-EVER, EIGHT-GENE STACKED OFFERING IN CORNStacked product combines Dow AgroSciences’ and Monsanto’s insect-protection and weed control trait technologies; product set to deliver greater performance, value and options for farmersINDIANAPOLIS and ST. LOUIS (Sept. 14, 2007) – Monsanto (NYSE: MON) and Dow AgroSciences LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), have reached a cross-licensing agreement aimed at launching SmartStax™, the industry’s first-ever eight-gene stacked combination in corn. The agreement is expected to create a new competitive standard for stacked-trait offerings and present an expanded growth opportunity for both companies’ seed brands and traits businesses by the end of the decade.

  9. Resistance Management • High-dose refuge strategy • Need 500:1 susceptible to resistant ratio • No more than 80% Bt corn • Refuge within ½ mile for CB Bt’s • Refuge immediately adjacent for RW and CB/RW Bt lines

  10. When is Bt Corn Needed? • Bt CB – • Late planted corn • Corn planted after May 5 • Bt RW – • Corn following corn >2 yrs • Bt CB + RW – • When both of the above is true

  11. Yield Benefit by Planting Date, 6-Year Average * UKREC: Herbek, Johnson, Bessin

  12. Results of Hybrid Preformance Trials • Many Single, Double and Triple stacks yielded very well in 2007 • Even where RW and CB pressure low

  13. Seed Treatments • On virtually all corn seed • Providing insect control to help with stand establishment • Other benefits • Seedling vigor?

  14. Seed Treatments and Vigor • In some studies, a yield bump not due to insect protection • Micro array data showing drought & cold tolerance, and other stress related genes turned on • Does not occur in all situations, not well understood

  15. Direction of Seed Treatments • Vigor enhancement • Nematode control • Resistance management – new classes of insecticides for seed treatments

  16. Insects Controlled

  17. Pest Monitoring • Armyworm • Black Cutworm • ECB and SWCB • Corn earworm • Fall Armyworm

  18. Overwintering SWCB Survival Caldwell, Henderson, Davies, Hardin Counties Four fields/county

  19. Summary of European Corn Borer Fall Surveys,University of Illinois Extension1943-2007 Kevin Steffey: Univ of IL
