  1. Water Service Forum By Cecil Kekana24 May 2017

  2. Pressure Management as measure to reduce consumption BACKGROUND Johannesburg Water initiated the project in 2012 with the objective of reducing water loss and pipe bursts through the servicing and repair of pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and the re-establishment of existing water management zones. The project involved all 10 JW depots (Avalon, Ennerdale, Hamburg, Klipspruit, Langlaagte, Midrand, Randburg, Southdale, Zandfontein North and Zandfontein South).

  3. Key Johannesburg Water Statistics

  4. Flow and Pressure

  5. OBJECTIVES • Assessment of PRV’s • Servicing of control valves, pilot valves and Strainers • Confirming discreteness of pressure management zones (PMAs) • Measuring pressure and flow before and after to assess the impact of the project. • Identify further water loss reduction using Advanced Pressure Management.

  6. PROJECT BENEFITS & SUMMARY SUMMARY • 764 PRVs assessed • 364 PRV Zones discreteness confirmed • 542 Pilot Valve and Control Circuit Serviced • 259 Strainers cleaned • 27 Advance Pressure Management installations were commissioned BENEFITS • Reduce leakage • Reduction in number of burst pipes • Consumption Reduction • Prolong infrastructure lifespan • Identification of bottlenecks in the system • Sustainable savings

  7. Overall Zone Discreetness Summary

  8. . .

  9. Financial Requirements For WC/WDM Initiatives • The table below indicates the anticipated budget requirements for the strategy activities (2016/17 budget is approved )

  10. Rehabilitation of Advance Pressure Management Zones.

  11. REDUCTION OF CONSUMPTION

  12. SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION

  13. CHALLENGES • Vandalism • Maintaining zone discreetness • Bulk meter deficiencies • Budget constrains • Lack of routine maintenance

  14. WAY FORWARD • ADVANCED PRESSURE MANAGEMENT • Evaluate existing controllers. • Recommend action: Re-set, service or replace controllers. • Selection of appropriate pressure management technique-time based or flow modulation. • Maintaining Advanced Pressure Management zones • Ensuring priority PRVs are operational and set optimally. • Evaluate where new controllers can be considered.

  15. Thank you
