  6. Economics Section – Publications Summary: The World Intellectual Property Report 2011 focuses on the Changing Face of Innovation. It describes key trends in the innovation landscape - including the increasingly open, international and collaborative character of the innovation process; the causes of the increased demand for IP rights; and the rising importance of technology markets. Finally, it takes a closer look at collaborative innovation models, analyzing how best to balance private collaboration and competition, and how best to harness public research for innovation. Publication date:November 14, 2011 Summary: The Global Innovation Index (GII) is a recognition of the key role that innovation serves as a driver of economic growth and prosperity. It is also an acknowledgement of the need for a broad horizontal vision of innovation that is applicable to both developed and emerging economies, with the inclusion of indicators that go beyond the traditional measures of innovation (such as the level of research and development in a given country). The fifth edition (2012), of the GII is co-published by INSEAD and WIPO. Publication date: July 3, 2012

Statistical Publications – World IP Trends Summary: WIPO's World Intellectual Property Indicators 2012 provides a wide range of indicators covering various areas of intellectual property: patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs, microorganisms and plant varieties protection. It draws on data from national and regional IP offices, WIPO, the World Bank and UNESCO. Publication date: December 2012 Summary: The WIPO IP Facts and Figures 2012 provides an overview of IP activity based on the latest available year of statistics drawn from IP offices and WIPO. It covers patents, utility models, trademarks and industrial designs and serves as a quick reference guide for IP statistics. Publication date: July 2012

They include a comprehensive set of statistics for the latest available year. Publication date: May – June 2013

  14. 1995-2009 2009-2011 Patent filings – Global growth In 2011, over 2 million applications are filed in the world thanks to a 8% growth… … but China accounts for most of that growth…

  15. Patent filings – Top origins … Japanese applicants are filing most applications in the world, but for how long? China resident growth results in making world resident filings (+10%) growing faster than non-resident filings (+4%)…

  17. Patent filings – Abroad filings PCT national phase entries represent the majority (55%) of abroad filings… … applicants from all top 10 origins use primarily the PCT to file abroad, except for Canada (36%), Japan (43%) and the Republic of Korea (28%).

Conclusion • In 2011, filings worldwide reached the 2 million mark (resident: +10%; non-resident: +4%): • China (+41%) accounts for 72% of worldgrowth (+8%) and 96% of resident growth; • SIPO becomes the largest office in the world; • But Japanese applicants keep filing most applications in the world; • Whereas US applicants file most applications abroad in the world; and • PCT national phase entries represent the majority (55%) of abroad filings. • In 2012, PCT applications showed also steady growth (194,400; +6.6%): • US applicants remain the main filers; • But filings from Asia – in particular Japan - are growing quite fast; and • Top PCT applicants file record number of applications.
