Overview of the Millennium Goals 189 Heads of State and Governments committed to achieve the Goals by 2015 • Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger • Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education • Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women • Goal 4: Reduce child mortality • Goal 5: Improve maternal health • Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases • Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability • Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

  7. 8 Ways to make a big difference! • Adopt a Resolution for the MDGs • Devote a percentage of the local budget for MDG initiatives • Inform, educate and mobilise your citizens and youth • Focus all existing aid initiatives on the MDGs • Support Civil Society campaigns • Host MDG Arches/Voice Box • Lobby national Government • Work with regional and international networks

  8. What are we talking about? • 30,000 children dying a day • Over half a million mothers a year die from childbirth and neglect • 120 million kids have no access to primary schools • 3 million people will die of HIV/AIDS in 2005 • This is a tsunami every week
