Background • FIVS-CEEV JOINT MEETING, Lisbon, Portugal, June 17, 2011 • President Jim Finkle and othersdiscussed the issue of pictogrammes. • Observations at the Meeting: • EU regulationsallow for the use of pictogrammes as a supplement to a verbal warning but, in practice, there has been no implementation. • Retailers are increasinglyrequiring the use of pictogrammes. • Conclusion: • As a first step, itwasthereforedecidedthat FIVS staff shouldgather basic information on pictogrammes thatexistinternationally on alcoholbeverages. • Project:An initial compilation of pictogrammes

Drinking and Pregnancy • FRANCE: • October 2007 - all alcoholic drinks in France must include a logo warning women of the dangers of drinking while pregnant. • Two Possibilities: • - with the mention « La consommation de boissons alcoolisées pendant la grossesse, • même en faible quantité, peut avoir des conséquences graves sur la santé de l’enfant»  • or • - with the official pictogramme :

  4. Drinking and Pregnancy PernodRicard 2011 - Drinks giant PernodRicard is putting warning messages for pregnant women on its drink brands sold in the EU. Ex: Havana Club Añejo Blanco labels with « Women pregnancy » pictogramme

  5. Drinking and Pregnancy United Kingdom Beer and Cider: Women Pregnancy Pictogrammes are also to be found on bottles of beers and ciders in the United Kingdom.

  6. Drinking and Pregnancy 2011 - DrinkWise Australia: - Communication campaign funded by the alcohol beverage industry - Issued a series of 4 labels carrying the message ‘Get the Facts’ - Encouraging consumers to find out more information via its website

  7. Drinking and Pregnancy A concrete Example: JacobsCreek The participants in the Australian DrinkWisecampaign include: Carlton United Breweries (Foster's Australia), Diageo Australia, PernodRicard's Premium Wine Brands, Brown-Forman Australia, Beam Global Australia and Bacardi Lion, etc.

Public Health Warning August 2011 - The Australian Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation released its proposals for health warnings on bottles of wine, beer and vodka. • Damage of the « youngdevelopingbrain » • Risk of developing cancers • Increase of injury and death • Increase of Risk of injury

Public Health Warning July 2012 - The UK Faculty of Public Health (FPH) said harmful drinking has become so common that "no nonsense" warnings displayed in a prominent place on alcohol products are needed to overcome widespread public ignorance about the dozens of medical conditions excessive consumption can cause.

  10. Public Health Warning In 2003, Heineken UK introduced responsible drinking information on all its bottles and cans. It now appears on 27% of packaged beer and cider products in the UK. • Threedifferent messages: • Don’t drink and drive • For people over the age of 18 only • Pregnantwomenshould not drink alcohol

  11. OrganicWine No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, Chemical fertilizers, or synthetic chemicals of any kind are allowed on the vines or in the soil of the vineyards. US - National Organic Program : Sets standards for certification of organic foods and wines • German national label - EcoVin : • For organic wine, ciders or juices. • The label responds to the criteria of the EU • legislation on "organic production of agricultural • products” as well as the directives from the German • federal association of organic wine-growing. EU - Organic LabelGreen fertilizers, In discussion: lower % of sulfites

BiodynamicWine US - Demeter Biodynamic Trade Association: US certifier for biodynamicproducts and processes for foods and wine Australian - National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce: The Organic and Bio-Dynamic Program ensures that organic and bio-dynamic produce exported from Australia meets the requirements of importing countries.

  13. Wine for Vegetarians Vegan Wines : It can sometimes be recognized with the following pictograms: - United Kingdom - “The Co-operative” supermarkets - Tree leaf - United Kingdom - Marks & Spencers -“V” - Suitable for vegetarians and vegans - New Zealand Vegetarian Society - Organic Wine

  14. Fair Trade Wine Argentina - “Neu Direction” This wine is certified Fair Trade based on standards established by TransFair. South Africa - Stellar OrganicsThe Max Haavelarpictogram for Fair Trade productsisdirectlylabelled on the front cover.

  17. Flash Codes or QR Codes A QR code allowsconsumers to beapprised of all the information about a product. By “flashing” with your mobile phone, you can obtain all information on the wine, accessible in 24 languages and on real time. More and more wine producers use this Flash Code to avoid too many pictogrammes on the label. Information is selected and given everywhere when and if needed
