  1. Make a Joyful NoiseUnto The Lord Psalm 96:1-3, Psalm 47:6

  2. I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. • The riches of music are so excellent and so precious that words fail me whenever I attempt to discuss and describe them.... In summa, next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits...

  3. Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. • This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.

  4. However, when Man's natural ability is wetted and polished to the extent that it becomes and art then do we note with great surprise the great and perfect wisdom of God in music. Which is after all is His product and His gift. We marvel when we hear music in which one voice sings a simple melody while 3 or 4 or 5 other voices play and trip lustily around the voice that sings its simple melody and adorn this simple melody wonderfully with artistic and musical effects, thus reminding us of a heavenly dance where all meet in the spirit of friendliness caress and embrace.

  5. A person who gives this some thought and yet does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God must be a clod-hopper indeed and does not deserve to be called a human being. He should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of asses and the grunting of hogs. • -Martin Luther

  6. Psalm 96:1-3 • 1Sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. 3 Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.

  7. Psalm 47:6 • Sing praises to God, sing praises; Sing praises to our King, sing praises.

  8. The Bible contains over 400 references to singing. - 50 of those are direct commands to sing. • The longest book in the Bible is Psalms • We're commanded twice in the New Testament to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

  9. Why does God tell us so often not just to praise Him but to sing His praises? • Why words and music and not just words alone. • Why does God want us to sing?

  10. Zephaniah 3:17 • “The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.

  11. Jesus sang hymns with his disciples. • Ephesians 5 tells us that one of the fruits of being filled with the Spirit is singing.

  12. Music servesThe Word of God • Singing can help us remember words. • Implications • We should be singing words that God wants us to remember.

  13. Colossians 3:16 • Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  14. Music servesThe Word of God • Singing can help us remember words. • Implications • We should be singing words that God wants us to remember. • We should do what we can to memorize songs and not be too dependant on hymn books or screens that have the words on it.

  15. Music servesThe Word of God • Singing can help us engage the words emotionally.

  16. 1 Samuel 16:23 • Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him

  17. Music servesThe Word of God • Implications • The way that we express our worship in song should be broad.

  18. Ecclesiastes 3:1 • There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

  19. Music servesThe Word of God • Implications • The way that we express our worship in song should be broad. • We need to be careful not to pit different styles against each other. • It’s important that we know that there is a difference between being emotional moved and spiritually enlightened. • Singing is a moving experience. It has the power to evoke certain emotions within us.

  20. Music servesThe Word of God • Singing can help us use words to demonstrate and express our unity.

  21. John 17:22-24 • 22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

  22. Music servesThe Word of God • Singing can help us use words to demonstrate and express our unity. • Implications • We should understand that it is the Gospel that unites us and not music.
