  1. My Magazine Ideas My Magazine Ideas By Karley Myall

  2. Front Cover I went online and found some front covers of what I would like my magazine to look like and these four really stood out to me. I decided that I would pick ones that are from different types of magazines and not just focus on ones that are similar to my chosen topic. I feel like these four magazines show what directions I could take mine in, even if they are not based on what I am writing about. The New York is based on a cat that is nicknamed ‘Grumpy Cat’ for how sad it looks. I think this magazine shows a lot of aspect of what I would want mine to look like, for example the way the image is positioned and how all the writing goes around it. Its not got to much going on but yet it still looks eye-catching and professional. I like the font that is used, I like the fact they have kept the font in the darker shades so that it does not contrast bad with the background and the main image. The colour of the background is a mixture of dark and light blue which I think is a nice contrast of different shades of the same colour. I would say the slight similarities with mine and this one will probably be the image and the use of darker shades of font so that it does not wash out in the background and it compliments it instead. The indie one is a fashion/beauty magazine. I think this one is so creative and even though it looks so simple, it still catches my eye with the way it’s laid out and the way the model posture is. I love the pastel colour for the background, I really feel like it brings the image to life more. The model herself, looks great, the image is positioned in a good place and she looks really nice and I feel like the eye makeup and the hair pieces make her facial features stand out more and the image itself as well as her hair colour I think it compliments the image and the background. I like the pun of ‘’May I shoot you?’’ I really like it, as she has a camera in her hand so it works really well, I feel like they could of perhaps picked a different colour to make it stand out more as it contrast with the hair to much, but you can still see it. I like the way it is set out. It looks professional and creative. I would definitely use the puns and the colour scheme from this magazine in my final piece. With the Kerrang magazine I feel like this is sort of another way I could take my magazine into a more dark tone and more using black and white imagery rather then colour, even though that is not what I want to do its an option. This cover was one of the Kerrang ones that stood out to me a lot. I like the use of the black and white imagery but making the text bright pink and brighter colours to compliment the background as it’s of a darker tone. All the text stands out well, is very bright and you can clearly see what it says and it is definitely going to stand out to its audience. I like the fact that they have added more blue to the singers eyes as that makes the image stand out more. If I could use anything from this magazine it would be the way they have used a dark image and used bright colours to brighten it up in a professional way. Finally, the ‘Pastel’ magazine, this is my favourite. As with my magazine I want to go with pastel colours, this one is one, I’ll be looking at for inspiration, being the colour scheme of it, is similar to what I want to do. I like this one as the hair colour of the model is bright and colourful and it makes you look. All the font again stands out well and the image really compliments the background. I like that they have still kept the colour scheme by adding pastel yellow clothing to the model so that it would not be to dark.

  4. Content pages I found some content pages that I feel are similar to what I would want my magazine’s to look like. With my content page I would like it to still keep the same colour scheme and the same sort of lay out. I would not want it to look like its to overcrowded by unnecessary images and text. I feel like these three images are the way I would like mine to look with its own unique style. The Cat content page I feel would be more to my taste for what I would want to do for my content page. I think everything about it is tidy and professional. I like the background, I feel like it contrast well with the image and the rest of the colours on the page. The image is a great image and it really makes the features of the Cat stand out well, all the different colours in its fur come out as well as its eyes and I like the fact that it is not looking directly at the camera. The fonts used are bold and you can clearly see what they’re saying. Again using the lighter fonts so that it does not wash out in the background. I like the use of the yellow colour for the font, its not aluminous and its not to dark, it’s a neutral yellow, which I think suits the page as a whole. If I had to take something from this content page to put into my magazine it would be the way that all the colours have complimented each other and perhaps the where the image is positioned. Even though the second image is from a food magazine, I feel like its such a creative page. I like the transition they have put on the text, to make it look all funky and not like the generic title for a content page just slap bang in the middle. Again it is a sort of pastel orange, which I have mentioned I am going to take on in my magazine. Which is what stood out to me with this content page, I feel like it looks different and it has its own unique style about it. The image again, looks appealing to the audience and very tasty, which would make them want to buy this specific magazine, its been placed in the corner of the page, which again I feel is different as many content pages like to have their main image blown up in the middle etc. The text again, looks good with the background, this one using black for the colour of their sub-heading font and then white for the colour of the font used to talk briefly about what is going to be on these pages. The background where the font is looks darker then the colour of the title ‘Contents’ which still looks fine and its nice to get a mixture of either different shades of the same colour, or a different colour. If I had to take something from this content page to put in my magazine, it would be the use of the different shades of the same colour as well as mixing between dark shades and light shades for my font colour, that and I like where everything is positioned, its neat and simple, but its still creative and professional. The last image, I got from a kids magazine, I feel like this is so creative in its own little way, it being from a kids magazine the more colourful and creative it is the more kids will like it. Its simple, but yet has a lot going on. With this one its based on a plain white background, with all the titles of what's on each page as well as the page number, under one and other, which are then highlighted in bold and bright colours, so that they stand out. There are a few images of animals and objects scattered here and there, but there’s nothing that looks to distracting to a child and by there not being a lot of imagery and text it will make it easier and more simple for the child to understand what the magazine is about. I think this content page is so creative, even though its not a lot, I bet it took a lot of thought, as it still looks professional and it portrays its target audience well. If I had to take anything from this content page for mine it would be how simple it looks but how its got its own unique twist and still keeps its professional look.

  6. Double page spreads I found a few double page spread articles online, to show what I would want mine to look like, obviously the content of mine will be different, but the lay out will be similar. The first image is of an article in a magazine that is based on Cats, which is what topic I have chosen, so I will be getting inspiration from this. This article looks fun and eye-catching. It’s about different parts of a Cat, eyes, ears, tail, nose, whiskers, claws and paws, to describe each of these body parts and what they are used for. I like the title of the page ‘Cats’, It has Cats bodies spelling out the word, which again looks creative and will make people want to buy the magazine. The background is a light blue colour, which again orange and blue contrast very well together, which is why this magazine page works well. The information is in little white boxes with bold text so that it has its own coloured background and you don’t loose it with the blue background. There is a lot of images on this magazine, which are placed very well and are great images, there is also cartoon images of Cats. The other page is a bout big cats and the files about them, again they have bold text and a different coloured background, which makes it stand out more. This is definitely my favourite double page spread and it is one I will be looking at to inspire my pages, taking the way they have set it out, using imagery, shapes and different colours. The other two articles are both fashion based articles, I feel like they are both similar in certain ways, being the font is big and bold, the colour scheme is similar and the information that is provided, will be similar as it’s the same type of magazine. The only difference I would say is the bottom image, is a lot more colourful, with the pink hair and the clothing worn, the model really stands out and sells what the magazine is talking about. It is set out differently with there being more images and them being set out differently, where as on the other pages its just one big image and a article on the other side of the page. If I was going to take something from both of these images it would be either doing a big image and the other side text, or using a range of images and setting them out in different ways.

  8. Extras For my magazine, I would at least like to add a quiz of some sort. The cat quizzes at the bottom are my favourite, as its similar to what I want to do for my magazine. The new years resolution one, I feel is different as you do not really get quizzes that ask that especially not about your Cat, I feel like this is well set out, I love the fact the image of the Cat and it is holding a microphone. It has a lot more detail then a normal quiz does, with what you pick and different options to pick from. I like the way it is laid out and how well it all goes together really well. The fonts colours go well together as well as the sizing of the font and the style of it. Where the image is placed looks great on the page as everything else is filed out around it. This is definitely the kind of quiz I would like to add into my magazine. As for the other Cat one its simple and its just a case of circling which one you think your Cat is, this is another favourite, as its ‘Pusheen’, which is a cartoon cat that has become such a big hit everywhere recently and that’s why I like the thought of using it in a quiz. This page for the quiz is set out neatly and there is not to much going on, there is different images of the character to portray the quality of your animal, its simple to read and you know exactly what you’ve got to do, I think it looks really fun and bright and I’d definitely do it if It was in a magazine, no matter what age I was. From this quiz page I would take the way they have used the cartoon character and how simple but professional looking it still looks. The other Cat page is an article, which is not a quiz, but it’s a filler for a page that you wanted to fill, which is why I put it here as an extra add on to what you could add that is informative and suits your chosen topic. Its about how Cats have fun in the indoors, it’s a small article on a A4 page that is based on this and I think it looks great. I like the image of the Cat where it is leaping and it is talking about having fun, the text colours and sizes look good and the way it is set out is clear and tidy and its not to overcrowded and it’s a nice addition to the magazine, if I was to take something from this page it would be how to add a small article into the magazine for more content and to make it more informative. The last two one is from a kids magazine and is about ‘Barbie’, this is probably not something I will do in my magazine, unless I was doing a children’s magazine it would be taken into account. It is a puzzle page, where you have to find the objects. This double page spread used a fairy like background, with a range of colours from purple, pink and blue and its sparkly and it suits what the page is about. The image of the Barbie doll, is to the side which is a great place to position it as then you have more room to put the activity next to her without it looking to crowded. Each step by step of the puzzle page is in a blue circle, which makes the text and stand out more. Its really colourful and definitely suits its target audience. If I was to take something from this magazine it would be the background and how well everything on it looks so bright and colourful. Finally the last quiz is from a fashion magazine, based on what dress you are designed for, this again is a simple quiz and is not complicated, just an easy step by step to get your answer. It is on a plain white background, with black text a few images that are black and white and the title which has an orange border around it to give it a little colour, this quiz looks fun and suits the audience it is talking about, I do feel like they could of gone to more effort with putting more colour in. If I was to take anything from this quiz it would be the way getting your answer is easy and the content put in.

  10. Colour scheme. With my colour scheme, I want to mix things up a bit, I don’t want to go for the traditional bold either dark or light colours, I want to go pastel. The reason for this is you do not really see pastel colours being used in magazine, maybe on the front cover or one page but mine will be thought-out, mainly using the colours shown on the image I have provided, as well as anymore pastel colours I can find for myself. The colours will feature on the background, some of the text and perhaps boxes around my text. With the font I will be making that darker, as if it’s a lighter tone on a light background, it would not work properly, so I will be doing blacks and darker shades, and maybe adding a little light shades where I can without loosing it in the light backgrounds. 12. Mind map of what I want my magazine to look like. Extras: I want to include quizzes and I would like to include a page about a local adoption agency for Cats and what they do and how you can get in touch. Back cover: For my back cover I will be including what will be in the next issue, or a contest to win something that relates to my topic. This again will be pastel background and bright colours as well as dark shades for some of the font. Front cover: For my front cover I am going to have an image of a Cat centered in the middle. My background is going to be a pastel colour, one I will choose from a range of colours and maybe contrast them together. The name of my magazine will go at the top and it will be bigger then all the other writing and information. I will include my title, sub headings on what I will be talking about and a little information, barcode, price, issue number and any other writing I want to include. My Magazine Content page: For my content page, I want to feature a fair few images of Cats, as well as keeping my colour scheme the same, I will include page numbers, information about what is going to be on each. Double page spread ideas: I want to do a few double page spreads, I will do a DIY page, an article about different types of Cats, one about what my peers have told me about their Cats and use anecdotes. Further down the line, I may come up with more ideas, but these are my firm ideas. Again will be pastel colours, this colour scheme I will keep throughout my magazine. Advertisements: I would like to include an advertisement page where I will be advertising a website called ‘Hey Chickadee’ what sell cute accessories for yourself.
