  1. Our focus for the next week will be probability. Before we go right into probability, it’s important to cover the basics. • Let’s start with some definitions first.

  2. As we discuss these words and their definitions, please copy the underlined sentences into your math journal. • What does it mean if something is impossible? • Impossible means it definitely won’t happen. • What does it mean if something is unlikelyto happen? • Unlikely means it probably will not happen.

  3. Let’s do a few more… • What does it mean if something is likely? • Likely means it probably will happen. • What does it mean if something is certain? • Certain means it definitely will happen. • What does it mean if something is equally likely? • Equally likely means it’s just as likely to happen as not.

  4. Likelihood Line Equally Likely Likely Unlikely Impossible Certain 0 1 ½ Take a look at this “likelihood line.” Do you see how we can use our fraction knowledge to see how likely something is to happen?

  5. Keep that ‘likelihood line’ in your mind… • Let’s look at some examples of math statements. Tell me if they’re certain, likely, equally likely, unlikely, or impossible. • Seven times four is twenty-one. • A parallelogram has four sides. • If I roll a die, I’ll roll a 1 or a 6. • All students in this room can locate New Hampshire on a map. • A student solved 5x4 by knowing 8x4 was 32 and subtracting four until they got to 5x4.

  6. Great job! Now, we are going to do a short activity to practice some more examples like the ones we just did together!

  7. Excellent job on that activity! • It’s good to see that we can do a good job determining what kind of events are certain, likely, equally likely, unlikely, or impossible. Let’s jot down two more quick definitions that also have to do with games and probability.

  8. Again, please copy the underlined sentences into your journal. • What does it mean if a game is fair? • A game is fair if each player has an equal chance of winning. • What does the word ‘outcome’ mean? • An outcome is the result of an action or event.

  9. Great job today! • Your homework is a double sided page, practicing placing events on a likelihood line, just as we have done today.
