Reasons for War Political Corruption Exploitation of Natural Resources Copper, gold, diamond coltan, oil Coltan is used to make cell phones, computers and video games. 2008: Oil exports were over $7 billion but the country is very poor. • Congo government receives bribes from corrupt foreign companies. • Foreign companies supplied weapons in exchange for oil. • 2003 peace agreement failed because the people who signed it were corrupt.

  5. Death after 2003 • 3.8 million people have died -half of them children. • More than 1,000 people die each day. • 5.4 million people have died from preventable diseases such as malaria and malnutrition. • 1.5 million people are homeless refugees.

  7. Conclusions • No simple solutions. • War still continues today and just as many people are dying. • February 24, 2013: 11 countries signed a United Nations Peace agreement. • The entire world must get involved to finally end this horrific civil conflict.
