  3. Demographic Threat: Ageing 1. Poland in 1990s entered the phase of long term demographic stagnation expressed by low level of fertility and spatial mobility. 2. Economists look at demographic changes and their influence on the reconstruction of the market: older people need new services and products

  4. Demographic Threat: Ageing • The Polish demographic situation is now better than many countries in the European Union. As one of the few countries in January 2014 , we had over 70 % of the population aged 15-64. • Eurostat forecasts that Poland rapidly catch up and even outrun ageing in many European countries.

  6. Demand for Care • There is growing demand for care services provided by both informal and formal carers. • The workings of the natural family systems have to be supported by systems, mainly public social care

  7. Poland as a Welfare State Social services - institution of state social policy designed to provide assistance to those individuals and families who cannot manage their life problem whithin their own means, capabilties and rights (Welfare Act of 1990)

  8. Social Care Receiver • People with dependent social care needs • Dependent children and adults • Some of the elderly • The disabled • People with specific conditions

  9. Social Care Providers • Formal providers • Public Institutions • NGO and private organizations • Informal providers • Family and friends • Neighbors and colleagues • Volunteers

  10. Location of Formal Care Services • At home • Day care centers • Homes for the Elderly

  11. Public Home Care Services: • Entitled lonely people who, because of age, illness , disability require the help of other people • Has some threats: • Limited financial resources planned for care services by local authorities • Overload of carers • Low quality of home care services

  12. Home Care Services • help with daily activities - shopping, cleaning, cooking, assistance in dealing with administrative matters, • maintenance of an elderly man in his independence and efficiency

Home Care Services • hygienic care , nursing - washing , bathing , dressing, send beds , bed linen , prevention of pressure sores and chafing , feeding • as far as possible to ensure the contact with environment, cooperation with the family, • specialist care services - eg . kinesis therapy and improvement of disturbed body functions provided by nurses , therapists , physiotherapists - a special kind of services tailored to the type of illness or disability

  14. Definition of Kinesis Therapy • Kinesis therapy is defined as the whole medical procedure to cure by movement (def. By Kinalski Ryszard) • The purpose of kinesis therapy is to maximize the removal of physical disability and preparation for further activities, eg: Socialization

  15. Receivers of Kinesis Therapy at Home • Disabled. • Injured and short therm after injured, • Movement chronic diseases • Orthopedical problems

  16. Health • Health, Your value is well known when you are gone!!! • Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (def WHO)

Effects of Biological Ageing • From 20 to 30 years old, muscle weighs 45 % of body weight, • In 70 years old muscle weighs decreases in body weight to about 27 % • The decrease in muscle strength and power leads to a reduction and then to loss of human locomotion and disorders of the body posture • Loss of human locomotion leads to a decrease in cardio- respiratory capacity and the development of metabolic diseases

  18. Geronto Kinesis Prevention • Physical exercises can replace almost any medicine, but no medicine will replace Physical exercises (W. Oczko 1537-1599) • GKP is prevention through physical activity of diseases that often occur in the elderly, especially due to the lack of adequate physical activity (def. by A.M Borowicz and K. Wieczrkowska-Tobis) • There is no social formal home care services that prevent effects of ageing for healthly seniors

  19. Ageing Problems Prevented by Kinesis Therapy • Dowager's hump • Falls and falling impacts • Osteoporosis • Abridgement of joint mobility and vertebral column mobility • Cardiac problems • Backaches

Economical Advantages of Geronto Kinesis Prevention • Reducing the need for care services of agile seniors • Slowing down the aging process, the need for care services occurs later in life or not at all • Shortening the care of seniors who already use such services • Efficient seniors can be a support of social welfare or economic. (Working Again Senior or Working to later retirement senior) • Saving money spent to subsidize medicines

  23. Main Questions • Should Geronto Kinesis Prevention become one of integral element of home care services? • Who should be the provider of GKP? Private or public? • Who should be the reciever? The poor clients only or the whole population?
