  3. Update Process • Tasking memo from Maj. Gen. Burg, HQ USAF/A3S, stated: “….include appropriate involvement from the GPS-W and civil community.” • May 2007, Air Force Space Command formed the GPS SPS PS Update Coordination Team to craft and informally coordinate the draft update of the 2001 Standard Positioning Service (SPS) Performance Standard

Update Process • Basic Ground Rules • Informal coordination only; with formal coordination occurring after the update is sent to HQ USAF/A3S • The update will follow the PPS PS format • Document the status and services to be delivered by the current GPS Constellation (snap shot in time) • Unresolved issues will be appropriately noted, documented, and sent forward for discussion and resolution during the formal review

  5. Civil Participation • Civil participation in the crafting and review of the draft SPS PS update included: • FAA • DHS/USCG • NASA • Commerce • State • FRA • FHWA • NOAA • USGS • NCO

  6. Civil Input • Civil Comments and Contributions • 261 comments received (some duplicates) • 10 pages of “Backward Compatibility” data • One unresolved issue being worked by the National PNT Engineering Forum • Language defining semi-codeless use • Remaining comments accepted or adjudicated

  7. Summary • Air Force GPS stewardship enhancement with early inclusion of civil participation • GPS SPS PS development and informal review process completed in late July • Overall civil team satisfaction with draft GPS SPS PS update • Waiting for DoD to define process and schedule for the formal government review
