  • Dugongs can grow to be as long a 13 feet and can weigh up to 3,500 pounds that about the size of a mini-bus.

  • Female dugongs give birth underwater to a single calf every 3 to 7 years. birth takes place in shallow water and the baby dugong is able to swim to the top of the water.

  • Dugongs are endangered species and may become exstinct unless we conserve their habitat and prevent pollution and unsustainable human intrusion. The establishment of marine parks, which include seagrass beds and ensure the survival of this timid animal are essential.

  • Dugongs are found in indo pacific region, ranging from the western pacific to the red sea. In total, they are found in 43 countries, including Eritrea. On the other hand, they are totally absent from the Caribbean, Atlantic ocean, the Mediterranean, and seas in temperate latitudes.

  • Length:up to 3 meters {adults}weight 400kg. Colour: light brown to light Grey on upper back, paler underneath Identifying features: no dorsal fins, fluked tail, males have two tusks, large head with specially modified mouth {bristles} used to locate seagrass in turbid waters.moves slowly gracefully and is very shy.
