GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY DEVELOPMENT AND FORESTRY PROCESS • Environmental concerns at global scale took place in the world agenda with the Sthocolm Conference held in 1972. • Establishment of the Brutland Commision • Release of the Brutland Commision Report in 1987, “common future” • Invitation the UN to take more serious steps to protect forests, to stop the forest loss • Call for international collaboration

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY Pan-Eurepean Process • 1990 Strazburg and 1993 Helsinki Ministry Conference on Protection Forests of Europe MCPFE • 4 decisions were taken • 1994 6 criterias and 27 indicators were determined in Switzeland • In IPF report 150 decisions were determined including preparation implementation and monitoring of the National Forestry Program determination of the criterias and indicators for SFM at regional national and local level determining the reasons for deforestation or illegal interventions

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY • Establishment protected areas for vulnerable ecosystems • Promoting the Private Sector • In SFM participatory approach FAO and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) • 1996 Start of the Near-East Process with 55 countries • 7 criterias and 64 indicators were determined • Turkey is also a member WARNING! Ministry of Environment and Forestry is responsible for the implementation of Sustainable Forest Management NOT GeneralDirectorate of Forestry

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY The Global Objectives on Forests aim to: 2006 UNFF • Reverse the loss of forest cover worldwide through sustainable forest management (SFM),including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increase efforts to preventforest degradation • Enhance forest-based economic, social and environmental benefits, including by improving thelivelihoods of forest-dependent people • Increase significantly the area of protected forests and other sustainably managed forests, andincrease the proportion of forest products derived from sustainably managed forests • Reverse the decline in official development assistance for sustainable forest manageme nt andmobilize significantly- increased new and additional financial resources from all sources for theimplementation of SFM.

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY Determination of the Criterias and Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management for General Directorate of Forestry • 1999 establishment the working group • After 3 years C&I were determined in Bursa with a broad attendance • A mixed set derived from Pan-European and Near-East • First Sustainable Forest Report Released in 2006 by Strategy Department

GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF FORESTRY Criterias and Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management for General Directorate of Forestry • 1- Forest Resources, • 2- Biological Diversity, • 3- Health and Vitality of the forest ecosystems, • 4- Productive functions of the forests (wood and non-wood), • 5- Protection functions of the forests, • 6- Socio-Economic functions of the forests. 28 indicators
