  1. Smells Unit – Investigation II Lesson 5: Dots, Dots, and More Dots

  2. Admit Slip • Draw the Lewis Dot structure for O2. • What do you notice? Unit 2 • Investigation II

  3. The Big Question • How do we draw Lewis dot structures for more complex molecules? Unit 2 • Investigation II

  4. Today’s Objectives: Students will be able to: • Use Lewis dot symbols to draw a possible structure for a C2H4O2 molecule. Unit 2 • Investigation II

  5. Agenda • Admit Slip • Homework Check • Notes • Classwork • Exit Slip • Product: Notes, Classwork, Exit Slip • Homework: None Unit 2 • Investigation II

  6. Homework Review – Lewis Dots • 1. I2 • 2. HCl • 3. CCl4 • 4. H2Po • 5. HNCl2 Unit 2 • Investigation II

  7. Homework Review – Structural Formulas • 6. C4H10O2 Unit 2 • Investigation II

  8. 7. C3H7N with one C-N double bond Unit 2 • Investigation II

  9. Homework Review – Structural Formulas • 8. C4H9ON with one C-O double bond Unit 2 • Investigation II

  10. Homework Review – Structural Formulas • 9. C4H7ON with one C-N double bond and one C-O double bond Unit 2 • Investigation II

  11. Homework Review – Structural Formulas • 10. C2HON with one C-O double bond • and one C-N triple bond • Draw the structural formulas for the following molecular formulas. • 1. C4H10O2 • 2. C3H7N with one C-N double bond • 3. C4H9ON with one C-O double bond • 4. C4H7ON with one C-N double bond • and one C-O double bond • 5. C2HON with one C-O double bond • and one C-N triple bond Unit 2 • Investigation II

  12. Lewis Dot Structures with Double/Triple Bonds 12/14/12 • Draw Lewis dot symbols for C and two O atoms: • Make single bonds from unpaired electrons: • Use remaining unpaired electrons to form double bonds. Unit 2 • Investigation II

  13. After arranging the atoms of a molecule, any unpaired electrons that are left get combined to form double or triple bonds. • Single bonds involve 2 electrons, so double bonds involve 4 electrons and triple bonds involve 6 electrons. • Make sure that all atoms in a molecule are following the octet rule and have 8 (or 2) electrons. Unit 2 • Investigation II

  14. Classwork Draw the Lewis dot structures for these three molecules. (Tip: Draw your Lewis Dot structures in pencil so that you can erase and move any dots.) Unit 2 • Investigation II

  15. 2) 2 Carbon Atoms Unit 2 • Investigation II

  16. 3) 1 Carbon atom and 1 Oxygen atom Unit 2 • Investigation II

  17. 4) 1 Carbon atom and 1 Nitrogen atom Unit 2 • Investigation II

  18. Making Sense • Explain how HONC 1234 assists you in checking out the structural formulas you create. Unit 2 • Investigation II

  19. Exit Slip • We know two things about a certain molecule. We know that its molecular formula is C2H4O2 and we know that it has one C=O in it. • Using Lewis dot symbols and the octet rule to guide you, draw at least one possible structure for this molecule. (There are a total of three possible.) Unit 2 • Investigation II

  20. Wrap-Up • Atoms can form double and triple bonds to satisfy the octet rule. Unit 2 • Investigation II
