What will you be doing in ESL 403? • Writing paragraphs • prompts are online • done during lab class, not at home! • get red ESL Center stamp on it • Meeting with tutors to revise the paragraphs • Doing grammar practice exercises on the computer • link and assignments are online • done during class, not at home! • do NOT email your instructor your results • print out score card at end of semester • Attending workshops on writing topics / take notes during the workshops • Keeping a portfolio of your work from class to give to your ESL 122 instructor

  4. What will you NOT be doing this semester in the lab? • Using FaceBook or MySpace • Sending messages via e-mail • Surfing the internet. • If you use the Internet for activities not related to this class, you will be asked to leave the ESL Center and you will not get attendance credit for the class hour. • (There is no way to make up this time)

  5. Some general information • You must attend the same class days and hours every week. • There is very little homework for this class • only to revise paragraphs after you see a tutor • There are no books or lab fees for this class. • Class is taken for Pass /No Pass, not a letter grade! • Make sure on your class schedule that this class is for P/N! YOU must do this – if not, you will get a “C” or an “F”.

  6. Tools for you to use in Center • Laptops • ESL 403 website • Grammar exercises (“Exercise Central” • Microsoft Word (write paragraphs) • Printer • To print 2 copies of each paragraph – no other assignments!

  7. Tools YOU need to bring • Every time you come to the ESL Center, you must bring the following: • Your PCC photo ID card (Lancer Card) • Your portfolio folder • With your class schedule print out • With your ESL 403 Assignment Sheet • Your flash drive to save your paragraph

  8. What’s an Assignment Sheet? • Your colored assignment sheet lists the assignments to complete each time you come in for class. • It gets stamped in and out. • Tutors and instructor will sign it after tutoring or workshops. • It helps record your grade, so don’t forget to bring it! You will get your sheet now. Fill out the top section now and bring it next week and every week.

  9. What if I lose my assignment sheet? Do not lose your assignment sheet! It is your proof for attending the class and for getting credit at the end of the semester. If there is any problem with the electronic record of your attendance, your assignment sheet will prove that you have been attending class.

  10. What’s a Portfolio? The portfolio is a folder where you keep the documents and your work from the class. You might give it to your 122 instructor at the end of the semester if he/she asks for it. It will be graded for completeness on the last day of class in ESL 403. Recommended folder: 2-pocket folder

  11. What goes in Portfolio? • Assignment Sheet • Class registration print-out • Your typed paragraphs, brainstorming + both drafts • Your notes from workshops • Exercise Central Score-card (end of semester) • Portfolio grading sheet (end of semester) Recommended folder: 2-pocket folder

Writing Paragraphs • 45 min only – no extra time • Follow proper formatting (see last page of syllabus) • Brainstorm on another piece of paper • Save to flash drive regularly • Print 2 copies – bring laptop to printer and plug in. • Staple brainstorm to 1 copy. • Have both copies stamped at the front desk.

  13. Always save some time to print!If the printer is not working -Use printer in LAC or in computer lab on 1st floor.- You will need a Printing Venda-card! Remember: always save some time to print!

  14. Printing With a Vendacard • To get a Vendacard, you insert a $1.00 bill into one of the five Card Vending machines. (The card includes five copies @ 10 cents a page.)

  15. Tutoring Tutoring is one of the most important services that we offer. You will meet with a different tutor each time to look at your paragraphs. Three-four students will be tutored at the same time. The next time you have tutoring, all of you will see another tutor together, not the same one from the last tutoring session.

  16. Walk-in tutoring at times outside of this lab class during ESL Center open hours can not be used as a substitute for attending your regular lab class hours.

  17. When You Meet With a Tutor • Your assignment sheet tells you when you will meet with the tutor. • You will work together with your tutoring partners and the tutor on your paragraph. • For homework to do BEFORE you see a tutor again, you need to revise the paragraph that you worked on before with the tutor. The tutor you see 2 weeks later will check that you have done the HW. • No HW= ‘not prepared’ for tutoring = no signature from that tutor.

  18. How do I prepare for a tutoring session? • Bring 2 copies of your paragraph from last week (remember they both must have a red stamp on them) + your Assignment Sheet. • Not prepared = no tutor signature = no credit for your assignment. • You cannot make up a missed tutoring appointment on another day. • At the end of your session, the tutor will sign your assignment sheet. This is your proof that you participated in the tutoring process.

  19. Acceptable ESL 403 Work • You must work on ESL 403 assignments during this hour: • Exercise Central (online grammar exercises) • Tutoring for ESL lab assignments • Write paragraph assignment on the laptop • Class workshop + taking notes • You must not do • Online research for your other ESL classes or PCC classes • Homework for other classes Next week we’ll look at Exercise Central

  20. Checking In and Out • Class will end 5 minutes before the time listed in the Schedule of Classes and you can check out by swiping your Lancer Card. • Bring your Assignment Sheet to the front desk for check-out stamp. • Do not leave class without checking out!

  21. ESL 403: P/NP Grades You will be given a Pass or No Pass grade based on the following: 1. A computer-generated report reflecting the times (and total number of hours) you attended the ESL 403 lab hour. 2. Original copy of assignment sheet. You must submit this on the last day of class. You need to change your grading Option to P/NP in the Records dept!

  22. ESL 403 Grades – P/NP only! You must go to the Records office to change your grading option for this class. You must do this before the school deadline. If you do not, you may get a “C” or an “F” instead of a “P” or an “NP”, and that will affect your GPA.

  23. We will take roll electronically each class by swiping your I.D. card when you enter and exit the ESL Center. Attendance

  24. Keep Track of Your Time! • You are expected to stay for at least 50 minutes every time that you come to the ESL Center during your registered lab hour. • You are responsible to make sure that you stay long enough each week. • At the end of the semester, if you don’t have hours of attendance, you will not pass this lab class OR ESL 122 class.

  25. Coming Late • More than 5 minutes late= absent from the class. • You can come in and do your work • You can’t scan your card • No attendance stamp “IN” on your Assignment Sheet . • Same rules for taking breaks.

  26. Absences Come every week during your registered lab hour. If you are absent more than twice, you will receive a “No Pass” grade for the class.

  27. Don’t use up your 2 absences in the first half of the semester because you may need them later. • There are no make-up classes for the ESL Center lab classes. • You cannot do the work at home for credit. • If you miss a paragraph-writing day, you won’t have a paragraph for the tutoring the next week = no signature

  28. Dropping the class • If you want to drop your ESL 122 class, you also need to drop this lab class. If you want to drop this lab class, you are responsible for also dropping your ESL 122 class. You cannot take one without the other. • If you stop coming to the lab class, you will not automatically be dropped, so you need to do it yourself. If you don’t drop yourself, you will get a NP grade instead of a “W” (withdrawal) for ESL 403.

  29. Like all labs on campus, the ESL Center has certain rules that we must ask you to observe.

  30. While in the ESL Center, please do not : • Change the computer system settings • Install or download programs • Damage the computer hardware • Bring in ANY food or drink (Including bottled water) • Take a break longer than 5 minutes • If you take a break, bring your Assignment Sheet to the front desk.

  31. Please turn off all cell phones before coming to class; a vibrating phone is still a distraction! You may not text message or talk on your cell phone while working in the lab.

  32. Due to insurance regulations, no children or other guests are allowed in the ESL Center

  33. Who Can Help Me During the ESL Lab Class? • Your lab instructor : who will also be your faculty workshop instructor • Peer tutors: who will help you with paragraph assignments • The lab technician/front desk staff: who will help you with computer questions

  34. Homework for next week: Get a portfolio folder Bring Lancer ID card + flash drive to class. Change the grading option for this class to P/NP Read the syllabus carefully!
