SkoogleChapter 6 Section 1Complete the terms below and the section outline. • Why was the Old Regime an unfair social system? • First and Second Estate owned most of the nation’s land and wealth while they paid no taxes • Third Estate was mostly poor and working class citizens who struggled to survive yet they paid all of the taxes that supported the other estates • Why was France’s economy doing so poorly by the end of the 1700s? • Social inequality • Unfair tax system • Lavish lifestyles by the First and Second Estates • Engaging in multiple wars • Debt • Inflation, food shortages and unemployment • What was the Estates-General? Why was this system not practical? a. It was the meeting of the three estates in order to discus/deal with important issues • Each estate had one vote, causing the first and second estate to vote against the third estate leaving them with no hope of having an impact • Why were the Bourgeoisie so important in pushing France toward a revolution? • They were mostly middle class and educated • Many understood and believed in the ideals of the Enlightenment • They could organize and articulate a movement against the monarchy Old Regime: system in France that created three social classes; First Estate, Second Estate, Third Estate First Estate: Church Clergy (.5% of the population) Second Estate: Nobility and aristocracy (1.5% of the population) Third Estate: peasants, working class and Bourgeoisie (98% of the population) Bourgeoisie: middle class who were mostly educated members of the 3rd Estate(teachers, lawyers, merchants) Deficit Spending: spending money that you do not have creating debt Bastille: French military fort that was stormed by angry citizens in 1789
