  2. Arcade games were the beginning of a revolution that complete transformed the face of entertainment around the world. Before the introduction of what are considered now as classic arcade games, consumers had very few options when it came to entertainment and leisure.

  3. During the twentieth century in particular consumers largely enjoyed television and radio. Both of these mediums had previously experienced their golden age as it were and the consumers were looking for something more personal and interactive with which to spend their time.

  4. These desires were realized in the 1970s when arcades came onto the scene. For a time, these games captivated millions. Players would flock to arcades were dozens of these arcade machines were set up so that users could enjoy a great variety of different games. Groups of friends would come with rolls of quarters, anxious to try their hand at beating the next level of their favorite games. This trend continued up through the 1990’s until superior at home gaming consoles began to dominate the market.

  5. At this time, the market largely saw these arcade games as antiquated and inferior to the newer games with improved graphics, controls and availability. As the sentiment of the video game playing audience shifted away from arcade games, many of these classic games departed the conscience of the general public.

  6. If it were not for the hard work of some dedicated individuals, many of these titles may have vanished altogether. Thankfully, many of these titles were preserved through the sale of arcade machines to private individual collectors.

  7. While this solved the problem of physically preserving these titles, this did not address the issue of general availability for those that were still interested in playing classic arcade games. This concern was addressed by fans of classic arcade games, but a solution could not feasibly be reached until the advent of public Internet access.

  8. At this time, fans of retro gaming were able to network and collectively reach a solution for the general availability of classic arcade games for those that were not able to acquire the physical hardware itself. Programmers and software developers within the community were able to develop software that would simulate the operation of these classic arcade games on the personal computer.

  9. The hope of the project was that—much like the home gaming consoles—personal computers would become capable of storing and playing multiple games. This way, fans of classic arcade games could store multiple games on their own machines for use at their leisure.

  10. After years of refining and updating the emulation software that was started around the turn of the century, this dream has largely been realized today. Thousands of classic arcade games are available to download for free online and multiple emulators exist to make those games playable for the retro gaming fan.

  11. Third party controllers have also been created to recreate as much of the stand-up arcade experience as possible. These beloved classics—that were once only available to wealthy collectors—are now available to all for free online.
