  1. Workshop on Building Competence for Civil Society in MENA through DESERTEC Tunis, 3 – 4 September 2012 REUNET: a new concept for the development of renewable energies in Morocco Mustapha Ayaita, General coordinator of REUNET

  2. Backgound To date, Morocco relies on oil and coal imports for 95% of its energy needs, and its expanding economy drives an approximately 9% annual increase in electricity demand, which stood at about 25 TWh in 2011. In a bid to alleviate the country’s expensive dependence on energy imports and to improve energy security, the Moroccan government has initiated massive promotion of renewable energy: The share of installed renewable energy capacity in Morocco will totalize 42% of total installed electricity generation capacity by the year 2020.

  3. Backgound Moroccan Solar Plan: Moroccan Agency For Solar Energy (MASEN) MASEN's mission is to ensure the implementation of the Moroccan Solar Plan. This integrated development project aims to set up in 2020 a capacity of electricity production driven from solar energy with a total installed capacity of 2000 MW in five major sites. MASEN has opted for two technologies: Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Photovoltaic for these stations.

  4. Backgound The Moroccan Integrated Wind Energy Project (MIWEP) The MIWEP is planned to enable the country to rise the installed capacity from wind energy, from 280 MW in 2010 to 2000 MW in 2020.

  5. Backgound The implementation of the government policy on renewable energy requires a significant participation of the Moroccan academic and research institutions. The involvement of these institutions and their resources is essential to achieve optimal benefits from these programs. Highly qualified professionals including designers, engineers and technicians will be required to contribute to this process.

  6. REUNET • In order to contribute to the successful realization of these projects, Moroccan University Professors and researchers took the initiative to establish the Renewable Energy University Network (REUNET) aiming • To promote training of Moroccan university Professors and researchers to enable them to build qualified engineers, technicians and managers to fit the growing needs of the Moroccan renewable energy industry; • To connect Moroccan researchers with common interests and to promote research cooperation between Moroccan and European as well as between Moroccan and international researchers; • To connect Moroccan research activity to international R&D programs; • To support Moroccan Universities to acquire equipment for Training and Research in Renewable Energy; • To promote exchange between researchers, manufacturers and operators involved in the Moroccan renewable energy sector.

  7. REUNET: Renewable energy training seminars for 2012, designed exclusively for Moroccan University Professors Seminar on Photovoltaic: April 23-27, 2012, ENIM-Rabat
