  1. Hadiya Development and Rehabilitation Network (HDRN) Preamble: Hadiya Zone is a region in southern Ethiopia inhabited by about 1.4 million people. People: The Hadiya people are one of the most dynamic and hard- working people in Ethiopia; yet they suffer from poverty, illiteracy, and communicable diseases. Hadiya ● HDRN-1

  2. Economy: The economy of Hadiya Zone is based on agriculture with an ancient style of farming, ‘Enset’ has been a staple food crop. HDRN-2

HDRN as a Network: • HDRN is a non-profit network founded in the USA by community members most concerned about famine & poverty, HIV/AIDS, illiteracy, and environmental degradation of the zone. • HDRN is organized exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of SECTION 501(C) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States. It has a tax exemption status. • It provides services and resources to the most disadvantaged individuals and families among Hadiya Zone residents. HDRN-3

HDRN Mission: • HDRN will work with other non-profit urban and rural community-based organizations, public schools, clinics and hospitals, and small development projects dedicated to improving quality of life within the zone’s economically distressed communities. • HDRN efforts will include, but not limited to: • Education & adult illiteracy • Health & HIV/AIDS • Environmental & water resources rehabilitation • Road construction • Rehabilitation of cultural values • Social discrimination of women & FGM HDRN-4

HDRN Objectives: • Education: • Provides scholarship for meritorious and needy high school and college students (30 students per year). • mobilizing resources (books, lab kits, aids) to schools • help establish Public Libraries. • building school lavatories • connecting with sister schools in the US and Hadiya Zone. • encouraging & facilitating ADULT literacy activities. • Preparing teaching materials for adult literacy in a language and culture of the Hadiya people. This also includes health education and environment. HDRN-5

  6. …Objectives (cont’d) • Health • Create awareness to protect against HIV/AIS and sexually transmitted diseases. • create awareness on the issue of child vaccination • Assist health institutions (hospitals, clinics, and health centers) by providing consumables like gloves, etc. • Encourage researches on traditional medicines • Assist trainings of nurses and technicians that could help child delivery, hygiene, and basic health care. HDRN-6

  7. …Objectives (cont’d) • Environmental Rehabilitation: • Assist & coordinate environmental protection schemes like forestation, prevention of soil erosion, & protection of wild life. • develop and teach effective use of water resources – streams and water wells. • protect human and animal lives (save humans from lions’ attacks, animals from illegal hunters) HDRN-7

  8. …Objectives (cont’d) • Rehabilitation of Cultural Values: • Conduct cultural studies on endangered values. • Identify and Rehabilitate Positive Cultural Values. • Abolition of Forced Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation. • Recognizing and encouraging Local Artisans • Archiving and Recording Local History.   9. …Objectives (cont’d) • Road Construction: • Hosanna – The Capital City of Hadiya Zone covered some of its major roads with asphalt after more than 100 years of its foundation. • HDRN has contributed its share from its meager source to the construction of Hosanna Asphalt Road. • HDRN also intends to improve access to remote areas of the zone. HDRN-9
